The issue here isnt that the police (on the whole) dont care, more that they simply arent given adequate resources to act appropriately in all cases.
If there are limited resources they have to be rationed approriately and Im sure a murder carries priority over a stolen car (Unless of course it was my car, then it's different).
The question is should this be higher on the list of priorities? Ive seen similar situations not all that long ago (last year).
A friend of mine had exactly the same problem. Car stolen from outside his house (old cavalier). Reported to the police.
Found by him 2 days later (While walking to work in the AM) parked in a side street in the town centre. Called the police who told him hey would be down to fingerprint the car etc.
That night, still no action. Eventually he went and recovered the car himself late the next day, it was not secure (Broken window etc) and he was worried about it being either stolen again or vandalised.
Total police action - zero (That we are aware of).

The thing these days is they seem to cry 'limited resources' on EVERYTHING, except the easiest offences, like, erm, speeding.
