The company I work for are currently having problems with their Internet connection, it’s BT Broadband and every Monday morning it’s refused to access the Internet until after lunchtime. This morning it was also down, and it has always corresponded with the office heating being off and the office being quite cold. The connection is networked to 7 machines from a server and our IT service bloke has tried all the usual turn it off turn it back on type things and tried it as a stand alone system and had no joy.
Now what I know about the Internet and computers can be written on the back of postage stamp, twice, so keep any explanations simple.
BT have been contacted and they say they have no problems in our area and aren’t being particularly helpful over the phone, it’s now working but it’s very slow, so any ideas from all you IT types would be appreciated.

If BT are saying there are no problems with their service, it tends to suggest that the problem is resident at your site.
At face value you would say the temperature is a red herring, but not so if you have a faulty piece of hardware. Unless your temperature is getting below 5C, you should be within the equipment guidlines for correctly functioning kit. For something with a dodgy connection, a drop of temperature could be causing some internal nasty.
My advice would be to get whoever installed your connection to come out and sort it out. Just remember however, you need to be sure the fault isn't with your own kit, because otherwise you're likely to incur a call out charge.

What is the error saying?
Also at what point is it not working?
Can you get to the last bit of kit before the wire levees the office?
These problems are simple when looked at it the right way.
What can you not get to. Item A yes Item B yes Item C not.
Then just check what is between item B and C....

Try leaving it running over the weekend to see what happens Monday morning.

I assume it's a fixed rate connection that doesn't time-out.

I know of one case where a slight crack in a printed circuit board acted like a temperature sensitive switch. It is a possibility.

You'll get some funny looks, but on Monday morging you could try pre-heating your router by shoving a hair dryer up its bum and giving it a blast for five minutes or so.

The majority of people I know have connection problems with their BT Broadband. They generally freeze or disconnect it seems.

My cynical nature makes me think that BT have reduced the reliability to make you switch to either the BTnet very expensive ADSL product or get a leased-line if you need to host something.

I'm not sure if the Business Plus packages are any better, as it could just be poxy UFO-shaped USB modem they give you.

But £30 for 24x7 Internet is quite cheap, so can't complain too much...
