what do you pay a secretary

what sort of salary per annum do you pay a good secretary with computer skills and a good command of a second language such as german or french? She would be employed in the South East (Dover), assuming that geography also has a bearing.
Anyone know? If you could perhaps contact me via my email, rather than clogging up the forum.

WalterU - One of the hardest things to call this. If you only need a secretary then a quick look in the local rag for what's the going rate. If however you want a PA then ask how much is she/he going to be worth, £10k, 20k, 30k ..... You need to sit down and work out what it is your after. A good PA is worth a fortune if utilised properly.

'PA' job advertisements are going to attract someone looking for a career imo. Therefore you're going to be looking more towards 20K for a sexy young chick in her (his??) early 20's even if she doesn't know how to do her job. Nice eye candy though
Call me old fashioned, but I reckon a buxom 45/50 year old wanting to do 2 to 3 days a week is more worthy of the money than a full time 20 year old And I honestly would prefer to pay a good PA £15/20K per year on 2.5/3 days a week, than a brainless dork for 5 days a week.

One of the broadsheets - Times I think, has a Creme de la crem recruitment pages for PAs and so on.. Having worked in a fair few places around and about, I can honestly say never have I found a good/well performing firm with bad secretaries/PAs. Worth their weight in gold to get a good one so pay well and you'll have a valuable asset working with you.
Buy a copy of the Guardian on Mondays, and read "Office Hours" section, or visit [url]www.guardianunlimited.co.uk - crap paper, but good info on jobs etc- had to do exactly the same thing a few weeks ago, and it worked out OK 4 me.

Bloody staff eh!! pain in the bum most of the time.
We pay about 13k with about 3-4% rise each 12-18months ish if we have to. If another position comes up we would advertise at about £12K
Not secretaries as such but similar although they have to think. The last 2 employees have been from banks and despite a lot of worry before we put the ads out we had a good responce from good quality people and have now filled the jobs with good staff.
Make sure you get a book on how to do good interviews, it has paid off for us. I was sceptical but wife did the background work and the questions we now ask are excellent and weed out a lot.

mine gets paid about 13k and thats South East too. That seems to be the rate for a "standard" secretary with not too many PA jobs attached to it. Adding more responsibility, I would guessestimate between 15k - 20k.
Oh, and I would agree that an experienced 45 - 50 yr old makes a better secretary than a 19/20 yr old girl. They seem to prioritise better and have more job satisfaction. IMHO and experience of course

staff members are a bit like wives - can't live with them, can't live without them

not much new. I live 4 miles outside, on the cliffs, nice view of the sea, but thankfully not of Dover.
If I do shopping, I'll go to Canterbury. Sorry Dover.
I feel a bit sorry for the place. But then, most big harbours are built for business, not for beauty.
