Driving IS a RIGHT, not a priviledge.
Discussion
Why are people so eager to surrender their right to drive, and call it a priveledge?
I pay PAYE on my salary. I paid VAT on my car, and tax to fill it (300%). I pay IPT, and I pay Road tax. I paid tax on learning to drive, and tax on the Test. I then paid tax to get the License. And pay if I need to change address. I pay VAT to get my car serviced, and VAT on MOT's.
I have to put up with roadworks, and going slow. I do not get billiard table smooth roads. I don't even get salt put down early enough to prevent accidents.
I pay stealth tax, in CO emissions, speed traps, and funding the Third World.
GO DAMN IT, THIS IS MY RIGHT TO DRIVE. It ain't a priveledge at all, no with all these hoops to jump through.
Get real, don't put your self down.

herts, gotta agree with you - I was in the states not long ago - tried explaining to them that to run my car it cost: £815 to insure (with £800 excess) £160 p/a for road tax, 76p per litre for gas, and only allowed 6 points before the whole thing is rescinded (has since changed as I have aged a few months).
P.S I was explaining this to a spotty 16 year old who drove a 2.5 V6 ford that he insured for $200. Bastard. Needless to say, he was incredulous.
What can we do? I am already at my wits end (I am 20.)
Edited to say - this is a 1.1L Seicento sporting I'm talking about

That'll put a smile on your face for a change
I got so pissed off with paying for crappy compressors with crappy hoses and crappy filler guages that I bought my own.

Personal transport is a right, unless there is a viable alternative. Since there isn't, we are caught between a rock and a soft-headed place called "New Labour thinking", so we get taxed for the necessity of continuing to run our lives, whilst being presented with no decent alternative. Why is there so little fuss in London about congestion charging? It seems to be accepted as a fete-accomplis. What will Londoners get as a resuklt of yeet another car tax? Better buses, underground, or trams? Or will Ken just get a thicker carpet in his office?
Until there is a viable alternative, Carl is absolutely right that driving a car is a right, not a privilege.

Except that by giving a car to any numpty who after failing 10 driving tests manages to fluke one can then be allowed to drive down the highways of our country with no idea how to control a car.
Once you've proved you are able to drive properly (and not just this outdated driving test we have in the uk) then it becomes your right. Until that time stay off my roads! (I'm sure I must have paid for a few by now
)

He sure as hell doesn't live in LA. I pay 1200 dollars, and I have good driver discount, profesional discount, Lo-Jack (tracker) discount, I'm 30 and I've never had a claim.
At least in LA insurance is more than in Bristol (BMW 380 pounds, I was 23, Trans Am 600 pounds, I was 25)
Petrol is cheap though... about 25c a litre.

I beleve the ones in central london only pay 50p a day instead of the £5.
Carl,
I can see where you are coming from. The problem is that every numpty who can pilot round our crappy driving test, even if it's their 20th attempt, gets to do it.
Did you see the state of the people on "worst driver"? and that Maureen woman? Do these people really have a right to drive on our roads?
That is where people are getting the "driving is a priviledge not a right" argument from. Also, if people treated it this way they might have better and more considerate road manners and none of this "road rage" stuff going on.
I'm not going to argue with you about the costs but should these sorts of people really just be given a driving license when they can barely even steer in a straight line. Never mind change gear at the same time?
