Is this a classic case of brinkmanship?

Well guyz, this is indicative of what can happen if rogue states are left to their own devices.
Nobodys been too bothered about N.Korea, but all of a sudden theyve become a rather large threat to world peace.
Same was bound to happen in Iraq sooner or later.
Thats why we're gonna whack him before they get to the threatening others stage.
What do the weak willed liberals say to do about the korean threat now then? How ya gonna talk yer way out of this one? The ultimate threat of nuclear war is hanging in the air, all because action wasnt taken to prevent this situation.
Sown the seeds of our own doom im afraid.
Im gonna prep for a big bang, maybe getting a gas mask and other supplies isnt such a silly idea?

Oh is that what we need to survive a nuclear war, a gas mask? Handy I'm sure I have one in my loft.
On a more serious note, who is to say which countries can and cannot have nukes? I agree that Iraq and NK hardy have a good record for being nice and peaceful but that does not give us the right to dictate to them what they can and cannot do.
I'd like to hear what George and Tony would say if a few world leaders said.
'Get shot of all your nukes or we'll sanction/go to war' or whatever'.
They would be outraged.
This is a bit of a rant but there is too much warmongering going on at the moment, I agree that something needs to be done in Iraq and that SH needs sorting to some extent. However the leaders of the world must stop thinking they are god and get a grip on the fact that war is a really, really bad thing.

fcuking good argument for Colin Powell to be using IMO

The best preparation you could make for global nuclear war would be to move to Ireland.
England is pretty much a bunch of overlapping target and fallout zones wih no clear corridors for travel between them, as is much of scotland. There is also a chain of nuclear power plants along the french coast that would ensure the death of the southeast (being primary targets for any strike against france).
Worst case scenario? Become a cockroach, only they have a chance.
Best case scenario? A few inches of packed earth will stop a suprising amount of prompt radiation. Enough to make the difference between survival and not in a marginal situation.
The problem is that there is likely to be no real warning now. The people who have nukes who are a potential (realistic) threat dont have the ICBMs or long range bombers to deploy them worldwide.
The threat is likely to be on the back of a lorry, or an airburst from a commercial airliner.
Worry about nerve gas, or tailored biological plagues if you really want something to get concerned about. There isn anyone out there who wants to nuke us who has the capability for more than a one off strike.

A nuclear bomb anywhere will directly or indirectly affect us in some way. Radio active dust, in water, in the air. But the french, dont get me started. They do nuclear testing which is agains the EU.
I dunno Davidd,i think that as a stable/ish democracy we do have a right to make sure that loons like saddam etc dont get access to weaponry that can threaten others.
Its in our own interests(self preservation) to make sure that threats of this nature are dealt with asap.
As can be seen in korea, its not wise to let it just go on without doing something.
This one will be a tuff nut to crack.

Yea but they did murder our Princess![]()
Yeah but name somethig else they have done for us recently?

wholeheartedly agree. Delta, we have no right in attacking someone because they are a "potential threat" they could use exactly the same argument back. Its equivalent to walking upto someone in the pub and hitting them because they "looked at me in a funny way".
Just because another country has a different political regime doesn't make our politics right and holy. I'd hoped that we had grown out of the crusade mentality clearly our "leaders" have not.

Im afraid I have to disagree with you there Smeagol. I want my government to deal with potential threats BEFORE they become actual threats.
Hitting someone in a pub for looking at you funny isnt on, however if they announced to their mates they were going home and then coming back with a baseball bat then thats a whole new ball game. (And I think not a bad analogy).
Deal with an issue before it becomes more serious. Stopping a nutcase regime from having an NBC weapons program is far better than dealing with them once they have a working one.
