Community Pace Cars
Discussion
Saw a report on the local news last night about 'community pace cars'. Some of the residents of the village of Mayfield in Sussex, have formed a group with the objective of slowing traffic on the roads around their village. This is to be done by driving around, at a deliberately slow speed, in the hope of slowing the following traffic. They filmed a beaky old tart driving along at 35mph, in her Peugeot 405 estate, in a 60mph limit. This initiative has been given the seal of approval by Sussex police. I was gratified to note a red peugeot 206 go barreling past round the outside of this interfering bitch while they were interviewing her.
It would seem we now have self-appointed traffic police, who are allowed to deliberately block the progress of others, even though they are driving within the speed limit.
How long before we all hear of the first road rage attack in a normally quiet Sussex village I wonder?

Pathetic. 35 in a 60 is just going to make people take risks to get past the silly old bat. I hope she has a big dog or a hammer in the car to protect her when the inevitable road rage incident happens.
Can't believe that the police are actually encouraging this. Don't they realise that if people are stuck in a queue then they won't be flying past revenue , ahem, I mean Safety cameras?

Get an Escort van, get round the old dear at some point where its possible and slam on the anchors.
Not that I would condone this sort of behaviour I just find this highway vigilantism shocking. If they can do this why cant I go and cut the hands off the scrotes that are constantly hanging round outside my gaff?
Matt.

If the police are allowing this then why don't they just put a speed limit in the village? It may well be that 35-40 is a safe speed for that particular bit of road, so why don't they make that the limit? Inappropriate speed limits probably cause accidents, because people don't trust the authorities to get it right anymore.
To quote para 145 of the Highway code "Do not hold up a long queue of traffic, especially if you are driving a large or slow moving vehicle, check your mirrors frequently, and if necessary, pull in where it is safe and let traffic pass."
it says legal requirements are prefixed by the words "Do not"
thing is, what constitutes a long queue?

Look out for a dark blue 405 estate with a 'Community Pace Car' sticker in the bottom left corner of the rear screen. And give her a nudge for me.
