After having a VERY good quote, which turned out to be a mistake, im currently a bit lost insurance wise. Basically im trying to get insured on a Ford Ka which for number plate and NCD reasons I would like under my name. However I dont mind if its significantly cheaper to insure myself under dads name, albeit without his NCD (they're on a Cerbera).

Does anyone in the wonderful land of pistonheads have any contacts/ideas on how to get my premium UNDER 2k in my name?? This is really depressing as its costing my parents a fortune to get me through my test, let alone having to insure the car!!!

Thanks in advance,
Ben

My daughter's almost 19, having passed her test last year. She was looking to buy an aged Fiesta (good nick, low miles, one family owned since new in 1980) for the princely sum of £150.
The insurers wanted £850.

Sooner you than me. Maybe you could try a sex change? Women seem to get cheaper insurance...

Theirs a couple of things you can do to reduce the premium. One way is to take a pass pluss course. Ask your driving instructor, it will include night driving motorway driving etc.

Insurance quotes that take this course into account can be up to 30% cheaper.

Look at getting a car which is not worth insuring fully comp as Third party fire and theft is generaly cheaper. It obviously goes without saying to get a v low insurance group car.

Dont get the car covered in mum or dads name (if its actually your car) as this would be a fronted policy and could get you into trouble for fraud.

Try adding your dad as a named driver. This demonstrates that you're more likely to be responsable (or something!)

The best so far is the 2K tesco quote.

With my dad as a named driver
Third Party Fire and theft - it doesnt work out much more being fully comp!

Cant believe this, its a ing 1.3litre ford Ka worth 2k, its gp2 ins!!!

Thanks for all the help so far, keep it coming!!

Edited to say: will take the pass plus but have to pass my test first!! - Just need to get a good idea.

2K is simply too expensive, my parents have been supportive of my petrol headed nature since I was three, but I really dont want to give them a 2k bill for my insurance, its enough of a guilt trip as it is with them paying for the car!

You might think that this is stupid but flog the Ka, get an old MG Midget for £NotMuch and get yer insurance through the MG Owners Club. Worked for me!

Do it as your dad's insurance, with you as main driver. You'll save more in 3 years than you would gain in NCB.

As for the pass plus, the insurers that give the siscounts are usually 30% more expensive in the first place.

Try Direct Line, were good for mine (1.4 Fiesta 3 yrs ago). Avoid the AA (silly quote specialists) where most people would just not insure you, the AA just gove you a horrendous price.

Havent bought a Ka yet, but an MG midget is out of the question for various reasons that I wont want to go into. Just out of interest, how much would htat be for a 17yr old then?

Edited to say under dads name its 700 quid cheaper, but I want my NCD and I have a personal plate which will need me to be the owner of the Ka - so therefore I cant have him as a MAIN driver easily.

Anyone have the directline website/ phone number to hand?

tesco.com is the cheapest for young drivers period!!! its been proven, though make sure you buy onlineas you get a 5% discount, doesn't sound alot but 5% of £2k is £100... (i think)

i'm with tesco, but my advice to you is get rid of the ka, and buy something older and faster, i'm currently on a 2.0 cavalier (i'm 18) and would only pay £1700 in my name through tesco and who wants to drive a ford based on the fiesta with the pushrod engine out of the ford anglia anyway!?!

That is with tesco online!!!!

What makes an older car cheaper to insure anyway? It seems to be based more heavily on how much of a threat I am to other road users, and in a Ka im about as threatening as a teddy bear.

Back onto the subject of MG's again. Well I got my Midget (1972) when I was 18, which was 8yrs ago. The fully comp price was around £700 then and my renewal now is £270. The only thing is that the policy is a flat rate there are no NCB's. Oh, that's limited to 5000miles, or take the drive out of yer speedo. If you were still interested the website is www.mgownersclub.co.uk. You don't have to get a Midge, you could get a BGT. Either way I would suggest a strong liking for Haynes manuals But I don't think this is an option all round... so I'll go and bore some other poor sod!

Have you tried (endsleigh - they do discounts for students, or elephant.co.uk?)
They are both known for good deals for us youngsters.

My advice is just to just lump it. Basically you are under 21 and have no NCD so you are not going to get anything less than four figures. I pay £1000 for a 8 year old fiesta valued at £1200. Its a bar steward basically.

Sorry to be a bit of a kiljoy but your insurance is going to be steep for at least 4 years regardless of what you drive!

Personally I would suggest that you give CIS a call because I bought myself a Citroen Saxo VTR (big mistake) 6 weeks after passing my test (age 17) and only paid £1100 Fully Comp.

I'm still with CIS two years later with 1years NCB and 9 points and i am paying just under a grand for a 1.8i Ford Focus Zetec.

So my suggestion is that you keep tryung lots of different insurers, because i can guarentee they will all come back with varying results?

you may be as thretening as a teddy bear, but think how much more damage i could do to myself, other road users and the scenery in a 2.0 Cavalier over your 1.3 Ka - quite a bit more!!

but yet my quote is £300 cheaper p/a than yours and i get a better (imo) and alot faster car for that money...

whats wrong with tesco.com? obviously you have internet access so why can't you buy your car insurance online???

you can get insurance under a grand at 17, i have two mates with 1.0 polo (hardly exciting) one was paying £1100 the other only £800 thats both fully comp in their names at 17...

the MG midget idea may work but i doubt you'll get insured on a BGT, they wouldn't add me to my bro's (24 then) insurance just for a week so i doubt you'll get one in your own name

It has a lot to do with postcode too though.

If I come off my current company block policy I may not get to carry over my no claims so I got some quotes out of interest. If I insure the car for my house in East London (garaged) its 4k, at my parents house in surrey it would be 1.7k... (not that I live at home so its academic, but I was interested in the comparison).

IAM qualification would save 100 quid.

I'm 26 with an Elise. Anyway hoping I don't have to come off the block policy

Thanks all

-Firstly, littlegearl, the quote I got WAS from tesco online, I have no problems with getting insured through them, but the quote WITH discount is 2k!!!

-the MG idea is a no because im 6 foot something and want something a little less fragile.

-Re: phoning CIS, will give them a call later - you really got insured on a VTR for that little??? under your own name???

-I dont believe the post code has that much of an effect, both my parents own extremely high insurance grouped cars (Cerb + Shogun) and both are insured for a fair wedge less than 1k

If you are a student in any capacity you may be able to get a discount with Endsleigh, if it's no good with them go for Norwich Union direct. I would hope you would be able to get insurance under 1k. If the private plate is causing the high premiums, then maybe you should save it for your second car and have a standard plate for a year or so. Pass plus is worth doing and if you go with Privilidge you can do a 4h course with BSM called masterdrive which will give you a further 10% discount. Hope this helps as its a pain the first couple of years.
