even if they eliminated speeding that is only 7% IIRC

I think they take the worst year for accidents pre cameras and compare that to the best year after the cameras went in.

Radio 4 said the experimental scheme had saved at least 280 lives. As usual no information was given on what evidence this figure was based on. I don't actually believe it, if the death toll on the roads fell by that much nationally, the government would be crowing about it. So how can they have 'saved' so many many people in just a few areas - call me stoopid, but...
Personally I accept that in general it's better to have a slow accident than a fast one, but that ignores the weak corrrelation between speed and accident rates, the vast improvement in car ability and safety since speed limits were introduced and, perhaps most importantly, the very idea of taking responsibility. We all know that driving is one of the many activities we undertake that carries an element of risk. Surely if the majority of the population break speed limits, then the majority accept the level of risk associated with that behaviour.
I do not advocate driving like a wally, and risking the lives of pedestrians in built up areas or other drivers out of town, but this whole speed thing is getting silly. Unfortunately, although I consider our government cynical and keen to raise revenue, I also think that the Priminister really considers that he knows best for us all, is set there to rule and not to serve and, consequently treats us all as the least able. (For heavens sake why should >50% of people go to university!!!).
Anyway rant over. I suggest all PHs should write to there MPs and the governemnt on this issue regularly.

In Northants road deaths increased by 28% in 2002 compared to 2001 (according to the local paper). So obviously the SCAMeras are working really well
