Hi All,
I'm doing some investigation into track day car hire, and I'd like your valued opinions on the following choices;
Van Diemen multisport
Caterham (grad, SL ??)/Westfield
TVR Chimaera500/Griff
TVR Tamora
TVR V8S
TVR Tuscan racer
pug 205 race spec
alfa 75 race spec (rwd)
porsche 944/924 race spec
Would you hire any of these?
Would you avoid any?
I know it's all about personal taste, and you guys may not be the right people to ask (I think people without sports cars - or track cars anyway) are more likely to be interested. I know the TVRs will be a devil to run, but Joe public really does like them!
Cheers

306 gti6?
e-type?
Radical?
Old mini?
To be honest I'd give any of them a go, I have only been on track in an elise so I count myself as a Joe-public type (but with dreams!) My personal favourite out of the list would be the Tuscan racer.
Of course depending on your budget I believe the Speed 12 is for sale at about £120,000!!!!

No Cerberas in the list??
Would have thought they would be better than a chim/griff on track and more importantly a damn sight safer.
I think the Tuscan idea isnt quite so good, as you say TopCats already have it pretty well covered.
Have always wanted to go on track in something completely unsuitable, dont know why, just have. Something like a Bentley or a Rangerover, maybe im just odd.

I did hear a 2CV suggested.
Don't know about Range Rover... could get charged for rebuilding the circuit if it came off!
Cerberas would be good as long as they didn't push the hire price up too much, and to that end you could think about Ultimas and old porsche cup cars, both of which are at Cerbera prices now.

Whats to stop you getting a USED low milage one at around 15-20K? It undercuts some of the stuff on your list by a big margin. A low milage 4.2 with the non-essentials stripped out would be an absolute hoot around track.

I too did some research into this a while ago and the conculsion was a cerbera was the way to go.
Sound daft, well not really. losts of the niggles you get with a cerby are noises, trim, water leaks, electrics stuff that you can forget with a track car.
I spent a lot of time talking to joolz about reliability, what would break and repairing damage. and he thought it was all doable. and that the car is basically very strong. IF it was damaged, then providing its only grp damage and your not after concourse quality it can be repaired cheeply.
The other thing about a cerby is the appeal and the fact it is a very fast car.
Suggested upgrades though were brakes and dampers.
Our other consideration was an imported mx5..
If it looks like your going ahead drop me a line as i might be interested in getting involved, although you need to look very carefully at the economics, as there are quite a few companies offering hire at the moment.
Have you also considered how your going to get the track time and spoken to some of the track day companies..
If you go the Mx5 route i also have some contacts in the car supply / tuning end and possibly even some sponsorship on the car...
ALthough i do like the idea of a range rover and have seen one on a track day...

Depends how quick you'd like to get round the circuit. Quick Caterhams (and types) always being the quickest. (Don't hire a grad - they are too slow in a straight line - SL min spec)
Big engine/heavy cars can be much fun though - if a lot harder to control. Rewarding if done right (about 50% of the time if you are me!)

GetCarter,
Yes, one factor is 'how easy is the car to drive'.
All TVRs will reach very high speeds by the first bend of the circuit, and an inexperience driver may not get round (hence high repair bills). TVRs aren't very forgiving (IMHO), whereas Caterhams may be.
I suppose it depends on the type of punter hiring.

Servicing on a Cerbera doesnt need to be *that* expensive, as mentioned below joolz is the man for servicing/ maintainance (sp?).
Infact, on a track car the bill may actually only be for a service! As the other little niggles can be ignored/are no longer part of the car.
I reckon for 20k you could get a 4.2 with AP-6 pots, nitrons and then strip it out. Of course you will have to be wary of who you let out in the car, but thats a problem with every track car.

You are of course absolutely right - on 20+ track days last year I saw SO many TVR's drive 'striaght on' on corners it was tempting to think they didn't have steering wheels... Of course it's simple physics - a 1000 kg car will have twice as much momentum as a 500 kg car, so will need *mucho* grip to turn.... or perhaps a crazy man driving - met several of those last year - and hope to meet many more this.
But be advised... Sevens are not 'forgiving' (R500 is a real handful!)

The Ariel Atom is a super car, but quite raw and rather expensive to buy. Also, would many want to drive it when it's pouring with rain?
Bigthunder at Bruntingthorpe do a package, of which the Atom is a part, would people pay 500 quis to drive one all day?
(Maybe if it was sunny
)
