Main Dealer Servicing - not required for Warranty

I was talking to a good friend of mine over the weekend, he owns a small garage that does Servicing etc on many different makes of care.
I was moanng about the qoute I have just had to have an inspection II on my BMW M Coupe(£760). I had a list of the parts etc and the labour charge is outragous.
He told me that since last October the some 'block exemption' law had been passed stating that as long as you had your car serviced using genuine parts it can not affect the warranty if you use an independant garage.
This is a law to stop Main dealers having a monopoly on serviceing to keep a car in Warranty.
He also said the guys who work at my local BMW garage are on the same course as his guys at college, BMW charge £70 per hour he charges £36 per hour.
Very interesting, I will be on the phone to BMW this afternoon to verfiy that they agree with this law.

Perhaps I can add a bit to this. What is said is true, when talking about the manufacturers warranty but not after market warranties.
Basically the manufacturer cannot stipulate that you use their franchised dealers to service your car so you can use who ever you want and still be covered under warranty as long as they use the correct parts. However once you are outside the manufacturers warranty then you may have an after market policy e.g. Warranty Holdings, and they can stipulate whatever they want in the T’s & C’s of their policy so you may find yourself being told to use a franchised dealer for servicing to comply with the terms of the warranty! Well BMW are not stupid,
If you buy a brand new BMW you can legally get it serviced anywhere as long as they do it according to the Service schedule.
If you have the extended warranty you have to then go back to a franchised dealer, this is because the Warranty is funded by BMW so they can stipulate what they want.
Which I suppose is sound business sense.
Just b***dy expensive, if I want to keep my warranty going.

As long as the garage is VAT registered and use correct/geniune parts then your warranty is still valid.
Workmanship is workmanship at the end of the day and it can be better most times at specialists than big dealers in many cases, check you warranty by phone to be on the safe side, but last year I claimed on a BMW coupe which was two years old and it had never had a BMW stamp on it.
Aftermarket warranties such as the Warranty Holdings TVR type: state:.
The vehicle must be serviced by a VAT registered garage, 6 months or 6,000miles [whichever is sooner] from the date of or mileage at purchase, and therfore at intervals of 6 months or 6,000 miles [whichever come sooner]and must consist of
1. Change engine oil and filter
2. Check oil levels in the gearbox and differential and top up where neccessary
3. Check coolant level and anti-freeze/inhibitor strength. Top up where neccesary
4. Check timing belt [if fitted], renew if neccessary
5. Brake fluid must be replaced in accordance with the manufacture's recommenadtion
services must not overlap the manufacturers intervals more than 21 days or 500 miles
To include many manufactures in the service time/scheldule they include the next text [relervant to TVR as well as BMW]
As an option the vehicle may be serviced in accordance with the manufacturers recommended service schedule by a VAT regsistered garage.

I hope this helps everybody understand the warranty better. Warranty Holdings have a good rating with TVR, but due to the type of car and product it is a very passinate subject and some people get their monies worth in a big way and other feel dissapointed at cover.
Unfortunately warranties and customers don't always see eye to eye!
