Lost my profile in Windows XP
Discussion
I've lost my profile in Windows XP.
Yesterday when I booted up it came up with a message on the Welcome screen saying that it was going to log me on with a Temporary profile.
It has done that but I cannot get to my files, Internet, E-Mails (everything under my profile).
It did this to me about a month ago and I successfully did a system restore, but this is not working now.
I have tried chk dsk and am currently doing a virus scan.
On my error report I am getting an error report of AMLI ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO Port(0X71) which lies in the protected address range.
Any idea's guys??
My TVR is pissing fuel all over the place and I can't get on to Pistonheads on my own PC either
I'm having to use my Dad's PC.
Help this is a desperate situation....

Sorry if you've tried this already, but, and assuming you're talking about XP Pro:
You should have a user name that you either log in with, or just click on at startup if you don't use a password. This exact name corresponds with a folder:
c:/documents and settings/[user name]
so if your username is "bob" the folder will be
c:documents and settings/bob
Inside this folder is all your stuff - my docs, profiles, favourites etc.
Check out the folder c:/documents and settings
You will see in there all the past and current user folders. You may see one called "[username].001" e.g. "bob.001" - these are created if there are 2 users called "bob". If this one is there, MAKE A COPY OF IT, then copy all the stuff from the original (e.g. "bob") into it. Try restarting. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE A COPY in case this makes it worse!
To clarify that load of techno crap, I'm saying that it is possible that Windows has created you a new user account (hence the .001 extension, or a completely new folder) and you should try to copy the contents of the original user account into it.
Once again, BACK UP before you replace anything!
HTH!

Hi. Windows XP has a nifty utility called Software Restore. This enables you to roll back the OS to a previous state incase you shaft it installing something etc. Easiest thing is to go to help and type software restore. Look for where it says ' software restore wizard' and run it. Select a restore point previous to the point where you think you screwed your system.
On the other hand I've been getting this since about my third logon to my machine in September - I just click ok and carry on - have not noticed anything wrong at all afterwards - i did try Technet but nothing there back then - as it seems to not have any bad effect I've not tried to fix it - possibly the wisest cause as fixing it could fix the whole o/s for good if you know what I mean.
At least I'm not the only one getting this problem.
