Apparently legislation is to be brought in that will make it legit for an employee to ask her boss (it is targeted more at women) how much the bloke sitting next to her is paid. If it's not the same then they can start stirring it up and demanding the same money.

It all started to go wrong when that Emily Pankhurst (?) threw herself under the King's horse.........

Whilst I think that a persons pay should be judged on their merits as opposed to what sex, age, colour etc. If two people are doing the same job, with the same ability, the same experience (which is relevant to the job) and the same results then they should get the same pay. However this is a bad idea and the potential for upset is pretty severe. For instance I would have thought that in order to be allowed to tell people how much someone earns that person would have to consent. I suppose the other way of viewing it is that if there is complete transparency, for instance printing a list of the entire companies wage details, then it could be argued that those who under performed would be pressurised and those who over achieved would be in a better position to argue their case.
I still think it is Vbad though.

PS Ted, you must be making waves if you are now being asked your opinion...well done.
Hurrah Ted has begun his campaign of infiltration.
Today the UK, tomorrow THE WORLD....... Muhahaha
I got seriously bollocked once for 'phoning 5 Live on an adoption discussion whilst on my way to a customer just so happened that my boss, also in his car, was listening to the same prog and recognised my voice. So I should bloody hope so too seeing as he's my dad.....

Thats bollocks. What happened to equal rights?
Ability is what counts.
The biggest problem is that the female employee can force the employer to reveal the collegue's salary, and the male employee can object, but the employer still has to reveal their salary. It sucks!
I agree, for the same job, with the same ability, salaries should be the same. Unfortunately they are not, even between employees of the same sex. Can they complain? I didn't succeed! (I had a couple of years experience, and was training a guy 'on the job', straight out of Uni' who was earning MORE than me)

I haven't read about this so I don't know how much is true & how much hyperbole.

What I do know is that every individual and employee, irrespective of gender or anything else, has the same statutory rights to the protection of their personal information.
It's unconscionable that any such measure to reveal your salary details to a female colleague (curious, axe-grinding or otherwise) could be brought into law.
I'd not be surprised to see it in a white paper - you get all kinds of crazy things in those, but once parliament has done it's thing I can see such a measure being thrown out as thoroughly illegal and unfair - I expect this kind of anti-civil liberty legislation is prevented by the ECHR anyway.
Perhaps someone could post a link to a site detailing these proposals?
I wouldn't consider it reasonable for an individual's salary to be revealed to their colleagues without their permission.
However, I'm also wondering if (whilst we all subscribe to the belief that pay should be based on merit) on the basis of your posts, you all believe that there is already equality of pay in the workplace and this is just another feminist ruse to see men downtrodden? If so, then I have to tell you that's not my experience - in my last job I was paid over £10k less than my male equivalent (who had a less demanding area of work incidentally) - and this was institutional rather than poor negotiation on my part; I'm no shrinking violet.
I think there is a problem with fair treatment that underlies all this, which needs dealing with to make sure that people get paid for the value of what they do at work. The rabid feminist movement and the 'warm fuzzies' actually put back progress on dealing with this unfairness.

RG - ISTM that like so many of the crazy measures we've seen proposed in the last however many years, this sort of thing is proposed with all best intentions in mind.. fairness, equality, social justice etc,.
The problem is that the proposals are often, like this one, so hideously flawed that they end up perpetrating a gross unfairness against one group in order to promote fairness for the other.
This is back to positive discrimination in my eyes, it's the same brand of meddling and discriminates against men for the benefit of women.
of course equal professional capability and experience shoul mean the same pay for man or woman. But do the ends justify the above means? I think not, but that's just me.
FWIW I've never been aware of working at a company that has discriminatory pay scales and I put it to you that your outlook is influenced by working in an industry hitherto infested with dinosaurs.

I understand the point, but for example in my case Im paid way more than my collueges who actually are better than me. why? because to hire me, at a time when getting any staff was hard- took a big offer/incentive to get me to accept. The other guys here were desperate and took any offer.
standard econmics of supply and demand frankly, and in no way should they have the right to argue for more money on any premis. they should have put up a fight when they got offered the job. try learning wage review tactics rather than demanding more money, "cuz my fellow workers do"
right with you, ted.

There is no way that I would want my salary disclosed to anyone. It is a private matter. In my experience I have found that finding out someone’s earnings always leads to discontent whatever their gender. Unfortunately there are still some companies who do not practice equal pay. I believe that a gov department exists that can demand details of an organisation's salary policy and make recommendations to ensure equal pay. This IMHO is a fair way of dealing with the problem no one knows who is earning what.
