right, I'm really pissed off now.

My council tax is going up around 13% - thats another 250 Quid p.a. The poor sods in E. Sussex have to pay around 20% more

All because of a "new calculation", local authorities are getting less funds allocated from central government.

What is this then other than a very sneaky way to raise taxes again?!? Since coming into power Labour have raised taxes like there is no tomorrow. After the pension funds hike my "financial adviser" told me it would cost me 20-30% of my pension. Now with the fall in stock exchange I probably won't be able to retire.

After all this, do I see any improvement in services?!?!?!?!?

To (roughly) echo the tory slogan of the last election:

I've paid the money, where are the improvements??? WHERE IS ALL THE MONEY GOING????

Recalculated at the new hugely inflated house prices...

The government cant allow you to make a profit on your house due to a rising market without wanting some...

More fiscal arse from Mu Labia.

I would suggest the drop in central government funds is to allow Gordon Brown to stuff wads of fivers into the big bloody hole in his public spending programme.

To prop up the Civil Service Final Salary Pension Scheme???

History has proved that no matter what they say, LABOUR (Whether New or Old) are a party of High Taxes and High Spending (Services not improved, just employ more people to do the same job/less a job, to massage the employment figures)

They want us all to live the same quality of life (Except themselves of course) whether we sweep the road or run ICI.

I did'nt vote for them, so can't blame me!!!!

didn't vote for them either. I'm sitting here, biting chunks out of my desk, because until the next election there is absolutely nothing you can do about all this ...

You have them quite banged to rights with this.

The private sector is just one fcuking great money tree to these commie leeches and that's just about all there is to it.

It's a conceptual flaw in the make up of British society that even some tax is ok - crap - ALL tax is akin to state sponsored fleecing, it really doesn't matter how you cut it.

I suppose the application of the old colonial 'no taxation without representation' might have some worth IF our forced donations went on a genuinely worthwhile transport infrastructure and some decent night sights for the forces boys but as it is, such a sentiment is probably more a cause for a UK based revolution than aught else.

But the revolution will be naught else than a gradual erosion and proscrption of the wealth creation spark, that more enlightened politcos acknowledge as laissez faire economic policy, rather than the bumbling excess meddling of dear old Nanny State.

Commander Skellern, out.

as I understand it, not yet. The 13% extra I have to pay is a genuine rise, in the same council tax band I have been in for the last 8 years. When they revalue my house, I'll jump up at least one council tax band. God help me when that happens.

the reason council tax is going up even more in the south east is the goverment has some sort of calculation they use for distributing central government money out to councils. This formula is being changed in order for more money to be diverted up north. Therefore the county councils down here have been left with a fcuking great hole in their budget and the only way they can plug it is to raise council tax.

This is certainly the case in the south east and probably covers all of the south

Hate to say it, but whats the option next time around? I am certainly no fan of the current bunch of jokers, but don't think I see a viable alternative now.. Whatever happened to the new party idea?

Exactly - even though you might vote in the best person for the job who has all of the right intentions. Chances are they will be stiffled, stopped and manipulated by everyone else to prevent them from doing any lasting good.

There are too many people that work for local (and central for that matter) who are on a 'winner'. They sit on their arses all day and do nothing - getting paid for it of course. They will absolutely anything to keep their job / position and status - even if it is a case that they have to lie and cheat....

Do I know this for certain - god yes. I have seen it with my own eyes! I know of several people earning loads of money in the civil service who do nothing and rake it in....

So, to answer the question WalterU - its all going to these people!!! There are good people that work for the civil service - but they are unlikely to be affected by the current elected member of parliament and it is one giant hole....

Nice to know isnt it.

Cheers,

Paul

Couple of things...

1. I live in 'the North': if and when I see any signs of this money being spent, I'll let you know. The only new stuff up here in recent times is privately-funded.
2. Even if you vote in another government, what do you suppose they'll change? Did you see Labour slashing any of the taxes that the last bunch increased? No.

I rest my case.

I will spit blood the first time someone on here posts that somewhere north of birmingham has similar rises.
WTF is going on, everones pay is being pegged to less than 3%, but outgoings are increasing 5 fold , it won't be too many more years before i've got to pay out more than i earn at this rate .
ALL politicians are thieving, lieing, smarmy, untrustworthy scum IMHO, shot the lot of them at dawn I say, come the revolution.

Would you spend 15,000 GBP on getting a 30 year old Cortina through it’s MOT or buy a brand new Mondeo for the same money? Ask Gordon Brown what his spending plans are for the NHS for the answer to that one. I’m off… this country’s a sinking ship… get out whilst you can. OK I admit it. I’m a rat.

If you look at it from the politicians' point of view the answer is very simple.

In order to get elected you promise tax cuts which you know you can't possibly afford. Gullible voters fall for this hook line and sinker, and you win.

You're in, and all you have to do now is try to make ends meet. You do this by introducing 'extra' taxes in disguise, right left and centre, and after a few terms in office you're rumbled and you're out.

Along comes another party with the same old dodge, and again gullible voters fall for it, and again taxes rise, and rise and rise.

This has gone on for generations, but since WW2 the vivious circle has become glaringly obvious, and the plain truth is that Great Britain Ltd has amassed a huge hidden deficit. In other words the quality of everything which affects our lives has dismally failed to keep pace with the times and, to no-one's surprise, has consistently failed to reflect the ever-growing tax burden.

Why?

Gross mismanagement by inept political parties whose sole interest boils down to 're-election at all costs', with little thought of the fiscal consequences when push comes to shove. Take a good look at the House of Commons - from the Prime Minister to the lowliest back-bencher. Are these people really fit to manage the affairs they control?

I don't think so. They are blessed with the 'gift of the gab' and little else, apart from their own political dogma (whichever party is in power), and unfortunately dogmatism and ability seldom go hand-in-hand.

Take heart though! The Civil Service will keep this shower of incompetents on the right track, won't they, just as they always have done?

Sadly no. The Civil Service has lost much of its ability, thanks to its unmanageable size and complexity, its ever-growing horde of political appointees and, alarmingly, constant interference from government. Result: thanks to dropping its compass overboard the good ship Britain is sailing round in ever-diminishing circles and consuming more and more money (to no good effect) while it does so.

We are absurdly over-governed, our manufacturing base has virtually gone, our infrastructure is collapsing, our education system is dying of PC, our health service is a shambles, our society is crumbling - for want of decent leadership and good example - our tiers of government are chock full of chancers who lack any sort of basic wisdom, and so on and so on.

Little wonder that anyone should ask "where's all the money going?"

Straight down a very large drain labelled 'incompetence and opportunism', lined with a patina of sheer dishonesty. This was not what Democrates had in mind. Not at all.

Top rant macnab, but sadly a very acurate picture of GB plc, when is it going to stop, or can't it.
It saddens me and I shudder to think what my children have in store.
Taxation is legalised extortion in my book, how can they justify these levels of increases year on year, they normally pull the schools/hospitals/poor blind jonny strings, surely its about time someone reinged them in, but who.
Far too many quesions and too few answers to all of these issues for me to even to begin to comprehend the state of the nation.
Very sad state it is too.

In Kingston it is going up 16%, and still the roads need surfacing, but oh no, we have enough cash to put speed bumps everywhere, and why oh why will the binmen that we ay for, not take away grass cuttings.

Here is an idea, lets sell of he old expensive government buildings that cost so much to maintian, like Big Ben, and use the cash for real issues.

If I was a suspicious person I would say that all the biggest increases are in the Tory controlled areas as Bliar's gov are reducing the subsidies they pay to pee off the Conservative voters.
