Mk2 Escort Mexico
Discussion
Ah blimey replica or Harrier, hnmm now you are asking, I dunno.
Hmm some research needed I feel, its not for me- just had a mate ask me some advise but I know naff all about them, tho I did promise myself as a nipper I'd have a Mk2 Mexico in orange one day, so I'd happily have one, much prefer them to RS2000s anyay & bizzarely over Mk1s also?

i had a signal yellow RS2000 when i was 21. i remember taking it out one night and saw 135 on the clock. felt like 200! was a great fun car really noisy with full rally spec system.sold the car to a right oik, who later told me he had got himself a stage 3 burton head for it and made no difference, the motor was already sorted!
The Mk2 Escort Sport used the 1.6 Kent crossflow engine but didn't have many of the body addenda that the Mexico had (it had front quarter bumpers, but no front or rear spoiler and used rostyle steel wheels).
The Harrier was based on the Sport but added four spoke alloy wheels, Recaro 'fishnet' seats, tinted glass and remote control driver's door mirror.

Sports are fairly underrated, the Kent engined Mk2s had less weight over the front and were quite nicely balanced. Sure it doesn't have the outright poke of the pinto engined cars but I was pleasantly suprised when I bought one as a cheap runabout at uni. Admittedly it also had thinner and crappier tyres but it was an absolute joy to thread through twisty mountain passes and would break away so predictably, my 2.0L with wider stickier tyres could carry far more speed through corners, but when it let go it would be much more sudden and less predictable.
over the years these cars will have been abused by the boy racers of their day and so i wouldnt say that it couldnt be a hotch potch of parts to make the car. after all its around 25- 30 years old now and fresh paint trim etc could catch anyone out. the logbook should say what model it is.
I'm a Mexico sinner - and a stupid one at that !
My first mistake was trading a genuinely immaculate Mk2 Mex for an XR3 when they came out (not even the XR3i as that hadn't been born yet)
Then to compound my sins I later broke a Mk2 Mex to build a kit car. I will say the body on the second Mex was very religious (i.e. holier than a holy thing) but the grimy bits were still in good order and the kit was pleasantly quick.
I've learned my lesson though and would now love to give a good home to an original Mk2 if there were any left at sensible money.
