So the "success" of the congestion charge has led to another stealth tax being introduced on motorists.
This time its the satellite tracking system that will lead to drivers being charged as much as £1.30 per mile.
Ministers are to start a trial of the system shortly.
Its the end of the world as we know it.
Better get off ya butts and fight, or go down cryin.

At least in London there's a badly overcrowdeed, anchient, dilapidated public transport system. What do the folk of rural places have as an alternative?
This'd kill me financially. I've driven about 35K in 2 years, which isn't far above average, but I'm a student. Quite a lot of that milage was on company business and making 40p per mile on expenses was quite a nice earner for me even after the cost of actually running the car.
Paying £1:30? I just couldn't do it. But then that's the whole idea. Transport is becomming something for the rich and privalledged these days. What happened to the right of free movement? Unless I'm much mistaken the government are trying to imprison us all in our homes.
Is there a list of contact details for MPs anywhere? If not how do I set about tracking mine down?
Is there a 'pushed too far' smiley?

there was a quick reference to this on tonights Car Junkies, town charging will be variable and country/rural roads will be free, they intend to do away with road tax and tax on fuel will be dropped to 'supposedly' impinge on the pocket as little as possible. The guy (don't know who he was) said that it was a win win system but the publics open mistrust of whichever party in power not to dip their hands into their pockets made it unlikely to happen. In other words political suicide, also there was a promise that it would not be introduced in less than 7 years, road building projects are going ahead meantime.

I have a letter from the Dept. of Transporrt, denying that this is feasible within the next 10 years, and on car junkies, it was mentioned that the Govt. has agreed not to consider it for at least the next 7 years.

If you think of it, it's a good system if you trust the politicians.
The people who use there cars at peak times and in crowded places pay the most and people like me that drive at unsocial hours in empty towns will benefit - but only if fuel and road tax are abolished.

I don't believe this would be feasable. Fitting every car, bike and truck? Nah, plus I'm not having anyone putting a tracking system on any of my vehicles. I'm also going to not pay extra fees either in the form of tolls on the ordinary roads or pay per milage.

freedom of the individual i say, remember the politicians are PAID by us to represent us and our views not us to serve them, which blair seems to be unaware of.
i am currently working in denmark where everything is taxed and regulated to death (my opinion). income tax starts at 50%, you buy a car and they tax you anywhere upwards of 100% after the authorities value the car, this explains why there are no sports cars( no lotus or tvrs anywhere) or luxury saloons (rolls, bentley etc). and to warn us all the public services seem no better than ours(in uk).
I can see uk going the same way with every hair brained scheme/stealthtax that condesending B###### Blair and friends think of.
so my point if you have one as an mp, next election vote for the party that came second in your area last time (which i know is personally painful to do!) and get this lot of two faced robbing ######## out. or we are going to be taking bikes and buses everywhere (the poor danes pay 25% vat on cycles)

You don't actually believe that these labour scum would DROP fuel charges/road taxes do you???? Cloud Cuckoo Land......... They did say however that it would be after 2007 that they introduce it? High hopes that they're still going to be a valid governmental force then????
Funny how Begg in that programme was effectively sanctifying road protestors!!! I've no probs with a protest but when it gets illegal (bomb threats, burying themselves, chaining to trees etc), bring back the birch!!!!!
