As reported in the Sunday Telegraph (surprised ya that i read such stuff? )

Almost all of the first british human shields to go to iraq were on their way home last night after deciding that their much heralded task was now too dangerous.
Two red double decker buses, which symbolised the hopes of anti war activists when they arrived to a fanfare of publicity a fortnight ago, slipped quietly out of baghdad on the long journey back to britain.
Nine of the original 11 activists decided to pull out after being given an ultimatum by iraqi officials to station themselves at targets likely to be bombed in a war or leave the country.
Among those departing last night were 68 year old geoffrey meynell, a former high sheriff of derbyshire, who admitted he was leaving out of "cold fear".
He had been summoned along with 200 other shields from all over the world, to a meeting at a baghdad hotel yesterday morning.
Abdul hashimi, the head of the freindship, peace and solidarity organisation that is hosting the protesters, told the shields to choose between 9 so-called "strategic sites" by today, or leave the country.
The warning folows frustration among saddam husseins officials that only about 65 of the shields had agreed to take up positions at oil refineries, power plants and water purification sites selected by their hosts.
It heightened fears among some activists that they could be stationed at non-civilian sites.
Mr meynell and fellow protesters who moved into the power station in south baghdad last weekend were dismayed to find it stood immediately next to an army base and the strategically crucial main road south to basra.
Iraqi officials said there was little point in guarding what they considered to be low risk targets.

What did these prats think the iraqis were gonna do with em when they went out there?
Did they really think hed let them position themselves at "civilian areas"?
How dumb can people be?
Seems they dont think that an iraqi power plant is worth dying for....ooops wheres those human shields gone?
Pricks! The mind truly does boggle at their lack of a grasp on reality.

Perhaps they checked their Insurance policies.

We should all take it as a warning about undertrained bus drivers, get on a No 12 to go to Oxford Street and end up in Iraq, good job an inspector didn't get on, a few excess fares there.

As I said earlier on, how can someone make such a dramatic gesture based on such little knowledge? truly astonishing. I do hope they are interviewed at length on their return, as all they have done so far IMO is to strengthen SH's hand and undermine Bush and Blair.

How utterly pathetic. Go out as a human shield, expecting to not have to shield anyhting. Hollow gesture anyone?

Their aim was to protect civilian sites that would potentially be destroyed if a bombing campaign went ahead and also raise awareness as to the potential dangers of a mass bombing campaign on the civilian population. The Iraqi officials stopped them from going to the places they wanted to and instead directed them to sites near Iraqi military installations. Given that their aim was to help the Iraqi people and not the Iraqi regime they thought better of it.

It's easy to take the piss sat on your fat ill-informed arses isn't it? Enjoy the rest of your sunday tabloids.

I take it Derns one of the failed "shields" then?

Dern, why do you think the miltary would waste a $200,000 cruise missile to bomb a civilian area?
Dosnt make any sense to use it in that way, thats why all this Krap about "thousands of civvies are going to be killed" is just that, Krap.
Krap spread about by the arse lickers that want saddam to stay in power, cos if they aint aginst him theyre for him, and those "shields" have shown themselves to be on his side by going there.
Pathetic.I hope they deport them to iraq, the stupid fraggles.

Very odd that all the Shields inteviewed when they were on their way out said they were trying to stop the war. No mention of the Iraqui people.

Another delaying tactic, another nail in the economy's coffin.

You haven't informed me of anything except your ability to get hot under the collar with little provocation. I wasn't trying to make any point other than I think it's a bit pathetic the opinions on here equate to slagging off a bunch of people who, no matter how niavely, had the courage of their convictions firstly to go out there and do what they thought was right and secondly to come back once they realise they were being manipulated by SH. If you don't want to discuss it and just want to rant away then feel free but it just p*sses me off when people are broadly negative and disdainful over the actions of others. The point of listening and discussing with others over their views is what brings about understanding and change. The arrogance to assume you're correct in your views simply because you hold them is staggering dim-witted. I too think they were more than a little niave but applaud their effort because they actually got off their arses and did something. I certainly don't believe they need rectal implants or shooting, if that was the just the appropriate punishment for being wrong we'd all be in trouble at some point, wouldn't we?

Dern - would agree that we should admire them for "getting off thier arses and doing something" but walking into a bloody war zone is
a) not clever
b) bloody dangerous

What would have happened if the order of attack had been given?
A lot of lentils, sandals and vegeterian meat spread over the desert maybe?

Sorry, but there were plenty of other ways to voice their opinion without doing something as stupid as that.

This is possibly one of the funniest stories I have read in ages.
For gods sake did they really think that the loonies who run Iraq where going to let them 'guard' the Basra branch of 'Lentils are US'.
On top of that standing in front of a power station with arms linked singing we shall overcome aoint going to stop a SMART bomb - SMART maybe but they still dont have a concience.

Dern, yes I got hot under the collar (I edited the worse bits out) The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. All the ‘peace protestors’ have done is to prolong the Iraqi people’s suffering, rally more support for an evil dictator and undermine the good intentions of Bush and Blair. SH is a dangerous loose cannon and he will be removed from power despite the interventions of these people, war is bloody unpleasant but sometimes neccesary and there are (thankfully) people prepared to do it so lets just support our guys out there doing the job.

These people don't even get me hot enough around the collar to hit full rant mode - they simply don't realise that Saddam cynically uses them AND funny that so many civilian targets are so close to legitimate military targets. When these people unfortunately return they should be strung up behind a Tornado engine and full afterburner intitiated - so they know what it's like burning in the fiery pits of hell where I hope Saddam Hussein is destined in the not too distant future.
