Im probably going to get shot down in flames for this but here we go.

From Ted's comment:

"You may have noticed I close the occasional off topic thread to try and shepherd things back towards a motoring slant..."

I would say a chat room would work wonders for a lot of people in here, so that they can chat freely without the fear of 'lock down'. This would also help clean up the boards of OT discussion.

I think Ted has stated pretty clearly that he fears chatrooms would lead to inane banter.

I guess it would also be much harder to govern. Besides, you can always arrange to meet PHers at other chatroom sites, or sign up for ICQ or Messenger...

I think an IRC chatroom would not be good as this would be taking traffic from Pistonheads.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. There are a number of reasons I don't desire a chat room on here. I must publish that FAQ...

Excellent, cant wait then!

Only comment I would pass is that the gassing section is what is building the Pheads community and the humourous elements / inane banter is what aids this and keeps people coming back.

If every thread became how do I pop rivet / whats the best way to polish a trunion / do you think a cerb will fit in my garage / whats your favorite blue / how big is your steering wheel? then individuals may be less keen to associate themselves.

Well, I couldn't agree more bennno, spot on mate.

A bit of fun is fine and I certainly think this place is all the better for a few light-hearted and funny "Mungo-esque" threads, as long as that doesn't become the only thing on here.

A happy medium is what we need with plenty of different topics to discuss. I for one am totally sick of "Iraq" threads and am purposely ignoring them. If you don't like the funny threads then don't read them and stick to the "which gear-knob for my wedge" type stuff instead....

Happy gassing!!

Agreed, the off topic stuff is just as appealing. Much easier to keep track of everything in the current format though.

That is one quote I never thought I'd see on PH, the two old men from the muppet show actually agreeing on something

I agree with regard to the off topic stuff and I'm not about to stop it (I'm about to post an O/T myself).

I just want to set some boundaries in the distance. I also get things wrong occasionally when trying to set those boundaries.

Can we leave this now? I'm not about to censor everyone and we've been over this a million times.
