Still looking for the perfect racey pad and racegirl throws up this little idea...........

"See if there is a web site for houses that are in a bad way, but livable but needs work, so we can move in, buy it dirt cheap and do it up as we go along, but its got to be semi livable to start with."

Think the 'dirt cheap' bit is a bit optamistic but anyone got any ideas, I'm mainly using 'rightmove' at the moment and they don't really have a section for places like this.

Theres a web site called renovatealerts.com that keeps popping when I access a few estate listings every morning - had a quick look and you need to register, so I blagged it but might be useful to you???

If they're worth doing they tend to go through 'local contacts' aka the estate agent/developer/builder mafia. The best bet is usually to go through auction for properties of this type. A house may well be worth you buying that a professional developer would reject because his margin wouldn't be large enough.

Dirt-cheap tends not to happen anymore-this type of property is very desirable, thanks in part to 'Property Ladder' type TV shows.

I'm looking for something similar at the moment in derbyshire and having a hell of a job. I spend a bit of time on search engines (key words renovate etc etc) and the usual web sites.

The problem is by the time estate agents get the details you end up viewing with about 50 other interested parties so the price goes through the roof. At the moment I am driving the long way home and viewing the areas I like for suitable projects after work. Ive dropped one or two notes through doors but no luck yet.

There are one or two interesting auctions that deal with run down properties but again loads of people.

The problem is everyone now thinks you can make lots of money doing it and dont realise the hard work. I blame all the TV programs.

Edited to add Jondokic you dont have a building plot on your farm by any chance do you ???

Only if you are interested in building a 'prestige, statement building' -whatever the hell that is- never get planning permission otherwise I love the National Parks Authorities-you can cover a C16th barn roof in corrugated iron, but you can't build a 200sqft stone outbuilding.

If truth be told, 'in a bad way but livable' translated into fluent Racegirl actually means 'I don't like the wall paper' and as the only 'DIY' I've been known to do usually involves pay-to-view TV
I think I'll stick to 'normal' houses, a full on architect designed 'Grand Designs' styleee monster pad would be cool but I just think it's stretching our budget/abilities as 1st time buyers.
