Paint & Rust removal & repainting

Could do with a bit of advice on this one...

... the Escort I own has drums at the rear, and one of the previos owners obviously decided to paint them (black thankfully) to stop this... but seems he didn't remove the rust that was there...

... SO I need to remove the remaining paint, the rust and then introduce some hammerite to them. Problem is... I'm not really sure how to remove the paint / rust that's there... any advice?

Sounds like it would be an utter bastid to remove, it'll more than likely be high temp paint that doesn't want to shift.

Save yourself a world of pain and just buy some new drums, they can't be much for an Escort can they??

hmm... s'pose thats the other option. Don't think they did use high temp paint... hence the problem in the first place...!

Look through Yellow Pages for sandblasters. Blasting will get rid of the paint and rust and take them right back to clean metal. Get a quote first, but should be far cheaper than new drums.

Good point, but you'll still have to take them off to do that won't you???

I'd just save messing around and bung new ones on.

Wire bush head on the end of a drill.
Brass may be more suitable if the drums casings are alloy.

Why not just wire brush and then hammeritte over the top?

Did rear drums on my car with wire brush and hammerite look ok so far after about 8 months daily driving.

Don’t forget to paint them day glow yellow matched to the pin stripe down you’ll need to put down the side

Buy some imitation discs, remove wheel and fit, thus hiding scaby drums! (To save costs, nip down to McDonalds tonight and nick some off a Nova/Corsa)
