My girlfriend's horrible Pug 106 Diesel passed it's MOT yesterday and when she went to pick it up, the garage gave her a sticker to put in the window to declare that it was MOT'd until March 2004 and said it was required by law.

I've never heard of this one! Never seen one of these stickers, and my car is fully MOTd.

WTF?

Yeah - don't know how long this has been going on, but I was given one when my car was MOTed last weekend..

Shall I put it in my window? ... errrmm... I think not

My MOT man told me soon certificates are being scrapped and you will have a credit card style one, eventually with insurance/tax and MOT details on it. All very well but still wont catch the parastites who dont have any of these.

So why is this a bad thing?
And it's about time there was an insurance disc for the windscreen as well
Give it a year from starting it off and then we can go around crushing the cars of all the tax/insurance dodgers

Yep, sounds like a great idea to me, but they have to tell us about it first, and make it mandatory after 1 year or how can it ever work?!

If they keep it quiet like this, no-one is going to respect it. My girlfriend decided not to display it.

Sounds like a great idea - MOT, tax & ins. all displayed. Needs a bit of PR though...

Can't find any info on the Vehicle Inspectorate's site, other that it will be computerised in a year, and printed certificates will take over from handwritten ones.

Good idea

Ireland already has a similar policy - makes it easier to spot the dodgers!!!

And means you dont have to spend two weeks trying to find what the hell you did with your old certificate when renewal is up!!

So you have to bring your windscreen into the Post Office with you?

Austria has a similar thing, IIRC, regarding when the car was last serviced, only this is stuck in the front wing.

France has had the same thing for years - brightly-coloured, easy to spot MOT and insurance stickers on the windscreen, showing reg no and expiry date. Great idea - I've often wondered why we haven't adopted it over here.

How about a SORN sticker for the garage door?

What if you don't have a windscreen?

Or come to think of it, no glass at all on your car, if it was made mandatory/the law, this could be a problem for some.

Surely you'd put it in the same place you put the tax disc???

Was just thinking that, I'll be mounting my tax disc on a motorbike tax disc holder thing on my roll bar, so could put that on the other side.

I have been wandering for ages why "insurance discs" dont exists, im sick of paying ridicluous premiums whilst other plebs dodge it and get away with it.

What would happen when u wanted to drive the other motor?...or when you were moving someone elses motor for them (most policies have the option to be able to drive other cars)

In theory probably a good idea, but it is just as easier to produce a copy of a window "sticker" than forge a certificate.

I reckon that if they made the penalty seriously harsh for no MOT/tax/insurance there would be a lot less offenders.

Its pathetic that the cost of a fine is almost favourable to the cost of getting MOT/tax/insurance.

yeah i got one when i had my car MoT'd earlier, they said you only need to put it in the window if you want to though, will help you remember...

surely, with a tax disc, MoT sticker, Insurance sticker, obligatory PistonHeads.com sticker and anything else in the window(s) we soon wont be able to actually see out of our cars!?!

perhaps a government ploy?
