Shed of the Week
LANCIA Delta HP Integrale 4x4
When it comes to cars, everyone wants a bargain. And with cars getting more reliable, more durable and more rot-free than ever they have been, paying pocket money for an older machine need not be a total restoration job.
In other words, old cars have never been such a good buy -- you get a lot of car for your money, and £1,000 is still throwaway money when it comes to cars.
So in the spirit of aiming for fun, low-cost motoring, here's our regular weekly slot following a trawl of Auto Trader's depths to find a drive-away bargain.
LANCIA Delta HP Integrale 4x4. LHD Turbo, 91, H reg. new £700 turbo rally spec, ideal winter renovation, just out of tax & MOT, good tyres, sad to see it go, drive away a bargain. £995. ovno
Discussion
Its a very optomistic add really.
Ideal Winter Project = Shitloads of work doing.
Its a real pity that the tinworm loves this car as much as enthusiasts.
This is an MOT Fail. Why ? I would lay money on rust.
Given this cars propesity to rust from the inside out, sorting the rust is a big job. A really, really big job, as in take everything off the car, dip it and then weld and paint and re-assemble.
2000-100000 depending on how much you do yourself.
You could always bodge it, but the car won't be suitable for tracking or hard driving as it will be unsafe.

Igonring the obvious mechanical horrors, as much as I loved these when they came out, I watched Fifth Gear and I am sure something quite ordinary (maybe a mid range hot hatch, not sure) lapped their circuit quicker than an Evo model of this and an Early M3! Don't bet on it being a great track tool, an Astra DTi may be flashing past!
Great cars. I recently sold an G plate 'Grale on behalf of a mate which needed some rust sorting, new turbo oil pipes and brakes disks /pads. I described the car honestly in the ad as a project needing some TLC and had over 60 calls. It went to the first caller for the asking price. Easist sale Ive ever made. I was seriously tempted to keep it myself but Mrs Phlap was having none of it

I doubt any of the modern hot hatches could see off a fit Integrale Evo - 210 BHP and 220 lb/ft in a car with 4 wheel drive and weighing less than 1300kg... 0-60 sprint in 5.7s.

The thing about Intgrales is NOT the straight line speed it`s about the stability / Ride quality / and delicacy of steering including the feel. if you havn`t driven a good one, you have no idea!!!!!

And if the steering box, track rod ends, bushes and dampers are shot..........in my experience cars like this eat these components as they are under more pressure.

Arrggghhh, nurse fetch me my tablets!!!
The M3 vs Lancia issue... I had almost forgotten about it. Gibber.
You have to realise that they way in which the press cars are driven is entirely different from the way Tiff drove the Integrale and the M3, i.e. with more mechanical sympathy and not clipping every apex and putting the car up on two wheels.
There was a 'debate' about this on some of the BMW boards but considering my car had 195bhp as standard and has consistently been dynoed around 185-190bhp it is not 'sick' despite 250,000+kms and all the suspension is complete with shiny new bouncy and squidgy parts so that's in fine fettle too. I think it's only fair that the cars are only compared to one another and not the mericillessly thrashed manafacturer cars they put round the track- on those terms I think the BMW did pretty well against something with apparently more BHP and 4WD traction advantage.
...and relax...
Aaron... the owner of the M3 in question.
It might be worth it for parts, but apart from that the rule is : NEVER EVER buy a cheap Integrale. Don`t even let someone GIVE you a bad one. You`ll do nothing but spend money on it, and it`ll still be crap £5000 later. If you want one, buy the best one you can find - it will never let you down and it will put a smile on your face every time you sit in it.
