I'm not exactly an expert but I think the message probably means Windows NT loader is missing? Do you have a start up diskette or anything like that?

Try typing the error message into www.google.com .
If you're running Windows 2000 try: www.jsiinc.com/SUBL/tip5600/rh5631.htm

It's half ten, and you can't get hold of your IT guy. Time to change IT guy methinks.

Good spot Nicholas - always eliminate the simple and obvious before wading into the mire of complexities..

that message, btw is the signature of a floppy disk formatted in NT4 without boot files being added.

No, for the record, he's a good fella, but as we're a small co, IT is outsourced... the guy does have other clients!

Fair point, having aswered the (home???) phone to a client this morning at ten past 8, i'm having a high expectations of others day.

I've given up offering free IT advice, since the rest of the business community seem to put so little store in our worth at the moment. A bit of proper investment in IT might avoid these problems, or at least have someone in place to deal with them. Sour grapes? Maybe, but personally I am doing OK. Lots of IT types aren't though.

Edited to add: Sorry LoudPedal, nothing personal. I've since asked for IT advice here myself ... the great thing about PistonHeads is the community spirit and the help and advice you can get. This post was a well intentioned, but misplaced, gripe at the lack of investment in IT. Hope you got the problem sorted. Humble pie being consumed.

I remember my first day as IT tech support, when the IT director phoned up screaming that his pc wouldn't boot up and it needs sorting NOW, what have IT done to his pc, it worked yesterday, bloody crap machines etc. etc.

Get up there, look at the message (like this threads message) and lean under the desk, click the disk out, put it on his desk, reboot, walk away, stifle snigger, and to day I left, he was as nice as pie to me.

It's the simplest one in the book, and it happens to everyone. Don't worry about it too much - we all start somewhere!

I'm not a tech, but I'm interested in how they work and I've fiddled around enough to usually get things right. A few years ago, one chap was going frantic as his spreadsheet appeared locked and he couldn't get the cursor to move. Without looking, I leant over his keyboard, pressed the scroll lock key and walked away.

Favourite of mine is the Num lock key. Amazing how many people with numbers in their passwords have a hard time logging in!

I used to unlock a dozen accounts everyday because of this. Cost the users company 60 quid a go as well

It may be an idea to go into the BIOS on startup and not make the floppy drive bootable,, saves a lot of hassle!! I have my 2 hard drives and the CD as boots, not floppy.
If you need to change it again, if you need to boot from a floppy,, it's easy enough to put the floppy as the first boot option again.
