Alfa GTV V6 V Elise S1
Discussion
Having decided that my Clio Cup is not really for me I am thinking of either an S1 Elise or V6 GTV. I think both cars are fantastic, though very different. I have 14 - 15K to play with so can get a decent version of either, what would anyone else do?
I have always wanted and Elise but it will be my only car year round and I am a tad concerned about mid winter ice etc and rain... The GTV, I think, looks and sounds awesome and goes well but aint going to be cheap to run day in day out so help! I used to have a 145 Cloverleaf and really enjoyed it - probably a better car than the Cup looking back. As such I am beginning to lean to the GTV...
Help!!

Test drive them both and try to decide which one does it for you. The Elise is my only car and perfectly usable all year round, and reasonably cheap to run and maintain too, so don't worry about that. £15k should get you a very tidy one.
If you want to read owners opinions, follow this link. If you decide to get the Lotus, I can guarantee you won't regret it.

The V6 does not sound so much meaty as howly... Nice anyway! I'm just going to have to do lots (more) test drives!!

Er... Twit... No. Actually I'm more pro the Elise as well. Sorry if it came across the other way. The only thing I would say is that if your doing 25K plus a year the Elise probably isn't your thing although I'm sure Bonce would try to put me right on that
.Hi, I've got a gtv 3.0 and a mate has an elise s1. I can hardly think of 2 more different cars....
The elise is noisy, annoyingly difficult to get into, leaks a bit (but to be fair that doesn't matter so much when you don't have carpets), and (sorry guys, no offence) the engine sounds 'dissappointing'. But for all that it's absolutely brilliant, just so much of exactly what you want in a sports car. It's also cheap to run and depreciation is very good.
The alfa looks nice (if dated), handles well (fwd though) and sounds better than almost anything at the price (if a bit too quiet). It's a little more practical and much better on long trips. My running costs haven't been too bad, service for 200 odd, + nothing much gone wrong. I think it does around 20 mpg in heavy traffic but over 30 on a long run. Alfa dealers are mostly dire and depreciation isn't great.
Overall I think it depends how hardcore you are. If you can face it the elise will be more of an expirience and the car you will remember for longer.
Just my opinion, you'll enjoy either !

put a sports exhaust on the elise - cures the sound probblem (if you think its an issue)
for 15k you can get a sorted car - even a 111s - better seats (leather) hard top for the winter. the roofs don't *have* to leak - it is cureable.
plenty of experience with the elise on this board - plus you can track an elise - I wouldn't recommend that in an alfa !

gargamels got it - make sure you get a psorts exhaust and take it up to 7k on the test drive - you've got to be happy with taht noise. With a 111S you get incredibly comfy seats - thin but superb - I drove non-stop for 220 miles the other weak and apart from the aural battering I was fresh as a daisy! The main problem with the elise is the lack of storage space, but i've go an L reg mondeo estate if thats ever an issue - for 15k you could get both too!

Might not sound 'meaty' but the Alfa V6 is the most musical exhaust note EVER in my opinion, and I used to run a Griff 500! It sounds best in 2.5 litre form in the old Alfetta GTV6.
Cheers guys, just got back from work and read through! My plan is test a couple of each - I have driven both before anyway, I reckon I cover about 15,000 miles a year and whatever I buy has to cover that. Also, unless I shift the Cup privately (I've not tried yet!) I'll try and off load in the deal, which means going via dealers. There are plenty of V6s in at dealers at my price but fewer elises. My reading is that I would get a newer, and may be a 111, elise from a private sale...
I reckon I would be happy with either, though I have wanted an elise since they were launched. Practical head is saying V6, heart is saying elise. I bought the Cup with practical head, I reckon I may have to give my heart thoughts a run!

Two questions:
1) Do you listen to the radio in the car?
2) What sort of roads do you do your mileage on?
Cos if the answer to the first is 'no', and <50% of your miles are motorways I'd go for the Elise. If you calculate how many waking hours you spend driving each week, the question I'd ask is do you want them to be interesting or dull (relatively speaking)? I had loads of fun 'commuting' in a Caterham- turns every journey into an event.
And I don't know if Bonce's Elise has a sports exhaust, but I thought that sounded great. Don't think much of the stock Alfa sound though- seems pretty quiet to me.
Have fun whatever you choose

That's the combo to go for then! It sounded good when you started it up, and bloody marvellous when you gave it some beans going off up the road. Turned my engine off, wound the window down, and had a listen. Along with everyone else on the forecourt
