Advert posted yesterday on the intranet bulletin board at work.

Have to say that I am tempted and seriously thinking about asking if he will take the Tuscan in part exchange :

For Sale

Rover 820i 1996 (P reg) 43,000 miles. Blue metallic. Fastback

£2,000 ono

This is a once in a lifetime offer to own one of the most extraordinarily bad cars ever spawned by the British car industry.

The Rover 820 was introduced in the summer of 1812 and was underspecified and atrociously thought-out in almost every respect. Since then the model has been revised and updated numerous times, whilst still managing to retain the laughable lack of attention to detail and quality which so underwhelmed journalists at its launch. It was superseded by the Rover 75 several years ago.

This particular specimen was owned by my father since it was nearly new (second owner, although there is a suspicious gap in its history, with evidence clearly pointing towards a spell in a field with lots of other Rovers that no-one wanted ? maybe caused by a temporary reduction in the number of people reaching retirement age). It has been fastidiously maintained ever since and comes with a full Rover service history (a document which is barely worth the paper it is written on) and is therefore in "as new" condition. My father made Rover clean the head of every screw on the car before he agreed to purchase it. That shows how well it was looked after, but also how desperate Rover were to get rid of it.

This model features a special "spongy" dashboard made of "plasti-wood", a substance which appeared to drive my father into a frenzy of delight and that he insisted on calling "walnut". It also comes with a sun roof, climate control, electric windows, a wide parcel shelf (plenty of room for your trilby, your shooting sticks, and leather gloves) and, somewhat amusingly, an alarm/immobiliser. The seats are better suited to a country club and the suspension has a special safety modification which makes the car uncontrollable around corners at speeds in excess of 30 mph.

Should you wish to partake in this piece of motoring heritage from the doldrums of the UK car industry, or simply spend Wednesday afternoons revving and reversing badly in B&Q car-parks, then please e-mail me through lotus notes ....
