From THIS IS HAMPSHIRE

www.thisishampshire.net/hampshire/basingstoke/news/BASINGSTOKE_NEWS_NEWS1.html

A BASINGSTOKE motorist prompted a major alert by driving down two motorways the wrong way on Sunday night before smashing into an oncoming car.

The 53-year-old, who has not been named, forced scores of terrified motorists to pull over and phone the police when they were faced with the headlights of his Vauxhall Corsa coming towards them on the M27 and the M3.

Officers blocked parts of the two motorways in a bid to stop the driver, who sparked the drama at about 8pm.

He was eventually stopped on the M3 after he collided with a Ford Escort driving south.

The drama began when the Corsa was seen being driven erratically along the southbound section of the M3 before it stopped at the Rownhams service station.

Shortly before 8pm, the vehicle was driven out of the car park and the driver headed the wrong way down the M27 westbound section.

The middle-aged motorist then turned north onto the south section of the M3 motorway and eventually crashed into the oncoming Escort near the Eastleigh junction before rolling to a halt.

The driver, who is believed to have been the only occupant of the Corsa, was arrested and taken to Eastleigh police station.

He was formally breathalysed, but police said he was found to be under the drink-drive limit and was later released to the care of a hospital without charge.

A police spokesman said: "There is no doubt the prompt response from the public to the police prevented serious injury to other road users.

"Although three vehicles were slightly damaged, a number of people suffered shock but no-one was physically injured."

Hummm....yes.

Surely driving without due care and attention and willfull damage to other peoples property (since he had full control over what he was doing and could have stopped).

Too bloody right.. the moron should lose his license forever at the very least.

Can't help it that some people are retards, but that doesn't mean these people should be allowed to drive.

I reckon we should revoke everyone's licenses on the next anniversary of their issuing and force a retest, using a new test with a maximum 35% pass rate over 3 attempts. 3 being the maximum permissible attempts in a 5 year time frame.

Could we invoke this with immediate effect for all Corsa drivers??????

It beggars belief the nutcase got away with doing something as lethal as driving the wrong way down two motorways when the 'heinous crime' of driving 5 mph faster than the speed limit doesnt!

35MPH on a 30 Limit = 3 points and 60 quid fine

Drive down 2 motorways the wrong way = Nothing

Am I missing something?

If he wasnt speeding then there is no crime to answer for anymore.

Sad state of affairs.

No, I think any equation ought to read plus plus car on wrong side of motorway = long stay in a room with rubber wallpaper and a free 'hug yourself jacket.'

there are dozens if not hundreds of PHers in Hants, Mungo, and you're the only one who thought that!

Ah, thats OK then... If he was speeding though that would have been unacceptible.

"Do you know why we stopped you"

"Because I was driving on the wrong side of the motorway?"

"That was a small contributing factor but more importantly our VASCAR system and six speed cameras recorded you being 6MPH over the posted limit."

Hmmm. I wonder if you could get away with driving at really silly speeds on the wrong side of the motorway?

After all, the Gatsos are set up for traffic travelling the right way

Admittedly other cars would be a problem, but it's worth a thought

If he is not charged when/ if he is let out of hospital, I will personally be causing some Shit. Big Style!

Last October I was travelling behind another car going in the right direction and was involved in an accident that wasn't my fault I got 6 points and a 300quid fine. For smoething that wasn't my fault ffs!If a 53year old was in the same situation I was in back then would he have got the same punishment. Like **** he would, because he is of an older generation he would have got away with it.

If I was travelling down the wrong side of the M-way like said person, I would have been charged with attempted manslaughter on the oncoming vehicles and Dangerous Driving!

What is wrong with people these days, like the guy that's just been banged up for 6months for the acccident whilst test driving a TVR, yet a guy going the wrong way down a very busy stretch of m-way appears to have got awayb scott free atm...

A freind of my Fathers ran a cyclist over the other week and all charges were dropped for no apparent reason?????????

Life just ain't fair!

Apologies for the long reply, but I feel better now!
