Anyone see 5th Gear or Dream Machines last night?

The Ferrari 308 cost £16,000 and had £45,000 spent on it! The car was valued only at £25,000!

Any comments

That will be the norm for restoring old cars then.... the numbers are pretty bad for just about all cars (including MGB's). They cost more to restore than they are worth, but thank god for the people that actually do it - without them we wouldnt have such a rich heritage in old cars in this country.....

Just the norm.

Cheers,

Paul

Restoring an old car is a hobby you pay to do - not a hobby it pays to do - as I know only to well. At least it looks like they did a reasonable job - not like that shower on Salvage Squad. I wouldn't let them near my lawnmower.

didn't see the programme as abroad but the facts of old car ownership are sometimes very wallet unfriendly. you never get back anything like what you spend on them.

saying that though the pure pleasure of driving an oldy is soon forgotten once you get'em going right.

Thought the crash test bit was very sobbering !! I never liked to give much thought to what would happen in an incident like that but it certainly brought home the risk we take each time we drive and much more effective than any 'Think!' advert..

Too true.

Bloody big bang, I nearly dropped my fork (it was teatime!)

I suggest the next crash test be between a Corsa & a Saxo, and complementary copies given away on a Saturday night in the local McDonald's car park...

that said achieving a 120mph closing speed might prove difficult if the cars are weighed down with fairy lights & air brakes etc.

Not bad programme. I missed the bit on the prancing donkey but liked the crash bit.

Didn't like the fact that every shot of the new Roller had it driving round with it's fog lights one "Max Power" style though. Nearly made me mad enough to complain.

They weren't it's fog lights- they were the headlights. Thing is so fecking enormous that if they positioned the headlights where you'd expect, they would be so high they'd blind other cars.

So what were the lights above them that were also switched on? and in daylight as well. Don't tell me they were the sidelights. If so that's way stupid to have sidelights the size of dinner plates along way above the headlights the size of dinner plates.

The lights the size of a tea-tray are indeed the sidelight and indicator unit! R...

Okay, I stand corrected. This car is even uglier in design than I thought Why they couldn't have been an integrated unit I don't understand.

Apart from the ugliness of it I couldn't believe how small the back seat space looked. Espcially when you look at the overall size of the car.

I'm sorry but it really does show that no-one understands how to make real stately cars like the British. Trust the Germans to screw it up so badly. Mind you, it could have been worse, it coould have been the yanks.

I must admit to a very small change of heart towards the RR Phantom.

Ok, let's face it; the reason many are taking contemptuous swipes at 'FAB 1' are down to it's large Germanic genes.

That it's something of a vast, technical tour de force that would be an absolute hoot to frap around in, seems to be something passing quite over most peoples' heads.

But, I do feel a certain mellowing in my own appreciations. That it is so vast is, as with the Maybach, a good thing.

That it antagonises certain tetchy sections of our latter day collective national psyche is somewhat unfortunate but simultaneously, I cannot, accordingly, condemn it entirely. (Anything that irritates the socialists being 'a good thing' per se, no matter how vulgar.)

In short, it does the plutocrat thing with immense, unavoidable disdain and I wish I could indulge accordingly.

But by being precisely that icon of British icons, in a time when bitter jealousy and 'preventatism' is rampant, is a huge faux pas in itself: that the Silver Lady's patronage stems from the irresistable, bombastic uber-boot of pointy helmeted Prussian inspiration is for all and sundry, simply asking credibilty to stretch just that bit too far.

Quentin's verdict of "don't" was therefore, essentially, right.

More and more I realise the benefit of Lexian anonymity, which is a hugely sad state of affairs.

Once again, you have to blame the bloody peasants.
