Don't know whether I've got the right forum but here goes...

Does anyone know whether Castrol GTX magnatec (10W 40) is fully synthetic?

Only it says on the back, "This oil has been synthetically engineered to....." so I thought maybe it was. If so can I use the half a bottle or so I have left that I used in my old car to top up a Civic Type R until it gets to its first service or should I go and get something else?

No, its semi synthetic. And adheres to no British Standards whatsoever. a proper "snake oil" - dubious IMHO. Stick to proper synthetic stuff.

I'm of the anti Mobil 1 crowd, not only do many cars consume it due to it being so thin, but at something like £33 for 4 litres it is hidiously over priced and the same formula can be found in many fully synthetic oils on sale for a fraction of the cost.

What sort would you recommend then?

I'm totally clueless about oil, I don't even know what the difference is between synthetic and non-synthetic

Having already topped it up the other day with about half a pint of Magnatec, Does anyone think I should get the lot changed? I've only done about 2500 miles in it so far.

Use what they recommend for the car. Some cars need a semi-synthetic, some a fully synthetic etc. Using Mobil 1 (for example) will do the piston rings on some running-in engines, for example, will do them no favours whatsoever. It is v. important that you use the right grade. RTFM ?
