Well as well as the Glandular Fever I've now got tonsilitis, happy joy

My throat is absolutley killing me and I'm finding it hard to eat and drink.

I was wondering, what with all the knowledge around here if anyone knows of any remedies to soothe or help cure tonsilitis?

Thanks in advance

Graham (doing well on the health front)

Gargal with soluble asprin. It works well. Also antiseptic mouthwash such as Corsodyl(chemist or dentist) is good. Listerine is rubbish.

Get some antibiotics from the quack is step one. Everything else said above is correct for relief of the symptoms and giving the bugs a hard time. As suggested, gargling with a hot strong salt solution is quick, easy and effective.

Apparantly you're better off eating toast as it takes some of the infected skin off. Keep the ice cream at the stand by if it hurts too much though!!

Worked for me.
Also, very ripe mango, thinly sliced, as an alternative to ice cream.

Really strong painkillers (Dextropropoxythene for example) then bed. Unfortunately GF gives general inflamation of the throat, so antibiotics don't do anything. Boots sell minty soluble aspirin that's not as vile as most. (Both my kids had glandular fever at the same time a few years ago )

Sorry to hear you're in a war of your own out there, Graham - gargling with soluble painkillers is a good one (paracetemol come soluble too), and of course you will remember to keep track of how many you have used gargling with TCP diluted in a little warm water is horrible, but by heaven you feel it must have done some good, and - think carefully about this before trying it - if you're throat is really sore, a fairly hot chilli can actually help a bit, it feels cauterised for a while#!!! ...well, maybe just the ice cream, then melon is also very soothing, and try sipping apple and mango juice (Tesco sell it) too.

Hope you feel better soon!

Sorry to hear about your tonsilitis Graham. Dunno if you remeber, but I told you a while back that my GF has suffered with ME for a long time?
Anyway 1st she got glandular fever, then the ME struck, she kept on getting tonsilitis on a regular basis until they were taken out. This seemed to coincide with a return to normal (more or less) from the ME. If the ME makes itself felt nowadays she *always* gets a sore throat first.
Bit too much of a coincidence if you ask me.
Get them tonsils out......

Have them out mate - I had glandular fever and got tonsilitis 8 times in a year - since having them lopped off (nearly killed me, but that's another story!) I haven't had a sore throat since - 6 years and counting.

Phil

Oh and if you can find a product called Tyrozets (sp?) which come in an orange tube - generally from GP get some - they numb the mouth and throat and make life generally bearable for a goodly length of time. (taste reasonable too)

Half a bottle of scotch? Should take your mind off it for a while

Seriously though a Hot Toddy (hot water, whisky and sugar) can do wonders.

Or try 'merocaine' antiseptic lozenges from a chemists, they work a treat for sore throats.

Thanks for all the help and advice, I'll try some of those.

I RARELY get tonsilitis, had it twice I think, last time was about 4 or 5 years ago. It's odd, the white spots seemed to have disappeared from the tonsils, but the flesh is quite red, and apparently there is a throat bug going round at the moment.

Thanks again though everyone.
