OK so I'm booking for Back Home this May and as it coincides with my wedding ani' I thought I would extend my stay up-north for a few days. Thinkning of a decent country house type hotel in the lake district. Anyone got any recommendations or any other better ideas of places to stay in the area? Rich...

Rich mate, thinking outside the box here, but i can recommend one NOT to go to. The Lakeside Hotel at Windermere. Treated me and the missus with utter contempt when we stayed there. In true English hotel style the bed was fcuked, there must have been an elephant orgy on it or something at some stage. Despite repeated requests, they did nothing except move the mattress the other way up - big deal.

Needless to say, I told them I wouldn't be coming back.

Best of luck in your search.

The Drunken duck is supposed to be very good (mates of mine stayed there and gave it a big thumbs up).

There is a nice place we stay at called Staffield hall, its self contained apartments rather than a hotel but very nice, its a few miles north of Penrith.

Holbeck Ghyll in Windermere v. nice when we stayed there. Not exactly minimalist, goes for the country house feel. Michelin *d restaurant. The lodge rooms are the ones to go for @ £140 ppn fb when we went.

Regent Hotel (Ambleside 01539 432254) take their food seriously. Been a while since I've stayed here, but was deeply impressed with the whole package. This isn't some 5-star palace, it's a small hotel with young, local staff and a serious chef. But what they set out to do, they do superbly. Located at Waterhead(?), villagey.

Overwater Hall (Ireby nr.ish Keswick 017687 76566) take their food very seriously. Smaller establishment than the one above; very much a country house converted to a hotel. It's quite formal, but friendly. Definitely need a jacket. Stuck half way up a hill round the side of Skiddaw ... remote ... saw a red squirrel in the car-park.

The "Duck" at Barngates near Ambleside/Hawkshead (as prev mentioned) is fine although haven't stopped there. The Brittania at Elterwater is good country pub but busy so you might not get a seat for walkers when you come in at evening time. Rooms small but ok. Meals good though. The Mortal Man at Troutbeck Bridge, 4mile east of Windemere is also good. Nice views, food etc. Relaxed atmosphere. All allow dogs in too. And do veggie options (well at least the Brit & the Man do, can't recall the Duck.) Fish dishes at the Brit & Man good too.

Best food in the UK IMHO ( < shared by quite a few other people) at Sharrow Bay, but I got shot down in flames for suggesting somewhere really expensive previously so I thought I'd leave this one to someone else

I only listed it as my boss stays there - I can't afford it!

Am I right in thinking this is where Paul Mc proposed to Heather Mills?

edited to add... yes it was - www.globeandmail.com/servlet/RTGAMArticleHTMLTemplate/D/20010726/wmccart?hub=homeBN&tf=tgam/realtime/fullstory.html&cf=tgam/realtime/config-neutral&vg=BigAdVariableGenerator&slug=wmccart&date=20010726&archive=RTGAM&site=Front&ad_page_name=breakingnews

Thanks for the suggestions so far keep them coming - and what about any other ideas of where to head off to after Blackpool? As we live in the south I just thought the Lakes might be nice at that time of year? Could squeeze in a visit to the Bluebird museum at Coniston just to keep a bit of petrolhead stuff in! Rich...

There was a thread on this very subject (area etc) last year - try a search Rich ...

Mate had his honeymoon staying at the Sharrow Bay a few years back - sounded like it was a top notch place.
