Best sub 1100cc engine?

I know its probably cheating as it wasnt originally designed as a car lump but......
GSXR 1000 engine, which i believe is 164bhp in its latest incarnation.
Im fully aware that this isnt the most 'practical' engine for a car and isnt really suitable for the overweight barges that seem to be the norm. It also wouldnt be an easy engine to live with for long drives...... BUT i think a drive in a LSIS or a mini (a proper one) with this engine would convince most people

really? didnt think that the remaps would produce that sort of gain, arnt most smarts 10/11 secs to 60...?
yeah they can do the evil twin re-maps and also by either winding the turbo on or installing a larger turbo this is possible, check on www.smartsrus.co.uk
i have to say i have no conections with this company other than i use them for serviceing and upgrdes

Belive the 110 BHP but not the sub 6 sec claim to 60 unless you are talking kilometers even with 183 bhp/litre?

yep, i think smartarse has pushed one out with 110bhp but the limiting factor really is that gearbox and i would be very suprised to see a 0 - 60 time that quick i think even the special ed 101 4/2 brabys are nearer 10 (9.8 secs
) The Daihatsu CB70/80 3cylinder engine from the Charade GTti, was 1.0L DOHC 12v, semi forged pistons, made 100bhp/litre, so 99bhp, bump that to 135bhp just by a remap or changing the ECU to the DRS one. It could be made to punch out up to 178-180bhp without too much fuss, but any more than that and you will probably be saying goodbye Mr Gearbox soon after. They were going to put the engine in this little beast, mid engined RWD like a Renault 5 Turbo for Group B or S, but nothing came of it
Charade Detomaso 926R
Perhaps the daddy of the stock small engined cars is the Nissan MA09ERT, 930cc, SOHC, 8v, Supercharger and Turbocharger, 110bhp standard. Fitted in the Nissan March SuperTurbo, stock as a rock it would do 7.7seconds 0-60mph and 1/4mile in 15.5 seconds, which was fairly rapid for 1988.
But then there is the Honda City Turbo, affectionately known as the bulldog, essentially a Mugen car with the same 110bhp from it's old SOHC, 8v 1.2L intercooled turbo four. It weighed a featherweight 730kgs (690kgs in the early version) but with those puny tyres, FWD and no LSD it just couldn't put the power down, but it became a cult car anyway with a popular one make racing series. This is the later Turbo II version from the later 80s with pumped up guards.
Until recently there was still the Daihatsu Storia (Sirion) x4 rally homologation machine with an intercooled turbo 936cc engine pumping out 133bhp to a fulltime all wheel drive system. But now been replaced with the Boon x4, same running gear, uglier body.

Bollards!! No way could a standard engined remapped smart do 0-60 MPH in 6 seconds!!
110 bhp is certainly possible, but not realistic without upgrading the hardware too.
A G2 Brabby smart has 74 bhp on tap, and most standard smarts with a remap added come in between 70 and 90 horses, unless the owner has added oily bits.
