I was talking to a fellow worker earlier in the car and he picked me up on my speed and asked me whether I take risks that would have the same consequences. He wasnt talking about the risk to our lives but the risk to my job/family if I lost my licence. Anyone else ever think about it like that or do you just not think about it?

I'm just curious.

You will probably get a better, if not full on response in the Speed, Plod & Law Forum.
Lot of personal experiences in there

I once lost my licence for 6 mths. As much as it frustrated me, I soon learn to work around it, I actually ended up saving quite a bit of money and spending more time in the pub nuts.

It also slowed me down a bit, at least for the first couple of months.

I too have lost my licence before but when I was alot younger and didnt have a care in the world. I also agree that it is a passion/hobby as well as a way of getting from A-B.

Intruigingly, mine's in no way a way of getting from A-B (me in London, car in Reading), nor a hobby. Just something I have to do, like Breathing, or Onanism.

I rate the chances of getting caught for a non-camera motoring offence at 5%

Therefore 95% of the time away from known camera sites you have little chance of being caught for any motoring offence.

It is no wonder that the standard of driving has got worse.

"How much do you value your licence?"

I'm only allowed 6 points at the moment and cycling to the train station sucks compared to driving.

got 3 points a few years ago, did not slow me down. getting tailed by bike plod for 1-2 miles and spotting him in the last 100 yards and getting a right talking to did slow me down much more

now tend to stick tothe speed limit or possibly a bit under if not in a rush, if in a rush maybe a few miles over, ie within the 10% region. majority of the time under cruise control

villages and places i know to be 30 mph, i stick to the 30 mph or less

job is based on site and think something in terms and conditions that losing licence = gross misconduct and loss of job

I don't believe exceeding certain speed limits is dangerous per se so no I don't think about it like that. If I get caught above the limit when driving safely I'll have to deal with it if and when.

What annoys me is the drivers I see every day making stupid errors that won't get looked at twice by the law and most certainly not by SCP's. Like the driver I saw this morning pulling out of a school exit road after being flashed out by the car infront of me which had stopped and left a gap before the red lights, and nearly taking out the motorbike passing slowly on my offside. She didn't even look right. That's how collisions happen, if they had collided it would be another statistic used to justify a bloody camera!

Which one are you criticising ?

The one letting them out, the one pulling out or the one overtaking on the approach to a junction ?

How about quantifying things in monetary value ("willingness to pay" ). For instance, if you knew you were going to lose your licence for a year but could keep it if you paid a certain amount, what is the maximum you would pay? £1,000? £5,000? £10,000?

Funnily enough I spent most of my ban in the pub getting rather more drunk than usual!
