I cant believe they are bothering. There is no chance whatsoever of government taking any notice. They didn't take notice of 2 million signatures against road pricing.

Everyone should sign it, it only takes a minute or 2. It's correct that it wont affect their policy one tiny bit but it means that there is a counter argument available when they come out saying things like "Speed cameras are generally regarded a posive thing by the majority of the public" We all know this is crap so lets show them that there is still huge opposition to speed cameras.

Much as I am not a fan of speed cameras and don't think they make the road safer. I think this might be a case of be a little careful what you wish for ...

totally speculative and unlikely scenario:

Let's say road charging gets implemented (plenty of other threads for thoughts on that)

scenario 1 - There are plenty of speed cameras around, so there is no argument for using additional automated means to prevent speeding

scenario 2 - Speed cameras have now been scrapped, so why not monitor speed via the road charging systems ...

I'm not signing, I'm not giving open rein to the knobbers of this country to drive like tts everywhere. The only thing that keeps half of them in control now is the cameras at key points on the road.

What is so bloody hard about driving within the speed limits anyway? If you want to race, go to a track day, get it out of your system.

yes If you can't have a good drive while staying within the law then you're doing something wrong.

Well - you are wrong. For a kick off, they have no effect whatsoever on the behaviour of "nobbers", who just drive like tw@ts within the speed limit or go somewhere where there are no cameras. BUT the whole point is that cameras have had a NEGATIVE effect on road safety, Safespeed's campaign is not about letting everyone drive around like a loony - see: www.safespeed.org.uk/sideeffects.pdf

It's all well and good placing gatsos in built up areas to protect pedestrians, but how can you justify this sort of ****witedness???

I'm sorry, but just like every other piece of technology that givernments get their hands on - misuse is as inevitable as the sunrise.

Yes, the gatso is hiding behind the road sign on the left. (picture courtesy of www.speedcam.co.uk)

I don't want to race, I just want to get to my customers sooner.

Time is money and hopelessly outdated widely ignored speed limits
aren't helping save lives.

Signed. Unlike many petitions on the web-site this petition is well worded and does not spoilt ita case by overstating the case or using emotive language.

I just hate the fact cameras have no discretion!
I got caught doing 36 in a 30 zone, it was 23:30 on a sunday night, i was travelling out of brighton, the road where i got caught was a good 50ft wide and the pavements each side are about 15ft wide, the road was straight with no other cars on the road and no pedestrians about. Ok so i understand rules are rules and i broke the speed limit but i feel if it had of been a copper on the side of the road with a hair dryer he would sent me on my way!

I tried to sign but Tony does not seem to like me as he is not emailing back. I do wonder how many of the 2 million road pricing petition supporters have been blocked - but they would not do that would they as an elected government.

I can see your point, but can you imagine if we had flexible speed limits, that changed with the time of day, the weather, the cycles of the moon etc. There would a dozen threads here about: "it said 70 mph this morning but only 30 tonight, so I got busted for no good reason"
