Waste of space?
Discussion
I've never really thought about this before, but maybe I should have...
Between where I park my car and where I work there is a gorgeous 996 Targa.
A couple of weeks ago, I noticed it was sitting very strangely. It took me a while to twig what was up. The rear wheel on the far side of the car was (and here is the point of this thought) not the usual 300 odd section but a ridiculous space saver of about 125 section.
I should have thought about this before as, Honda being the forward thinking company they are, my crx has a space saver too.
Now, if you have car that is so tightly packaged that there is no enough roon for a full width spare I suppose a skinny one sort of makes sense...
...until you come to use it.
In the case of the 996. The space saver sits snuggly under the bonnet until it is needed. Then once it is pressed into service, undoubtedly in the driving rain, where on Porsche's earth are you supposed to put the mahoosive rear you've just removed from the car and the muddy gutter you were forced into when you pulled over?
It won't go into the wheel carrier and allow the bonnet to close, so my guess is the poor passenger will end up with it on the their lap. The owner will the be landed with a fat valeting bill to remove the mud and break dust from their prized wilton and hide, and the space svaer will probably pop anyway.
I was just wondering...

Having just gone through this I can agree with you !
Actually the monster rear (265/30/18) went in one of the back seats atfer a little struggle, though my passenger had to put her seat right forward.
AA man who arrived after I'd got the spare on looking at small rear seat and hyoowwge back wheel "Hmmmm...."
but we squeezed it in in the end.

Alan - they (or most) have a space saver in the boot. The boot is however big enough to take the standard wheel, as long as you don't have two sets of golf clubs and the roof in there!
However, for most occasions, most TVR drivers leave the spare out and just carry the tyre inflator foam type stuff.
