Hi all,

Can anyone tell me how I can spot the difference between a 130ps and a 100ps VW 1.9Tdi engine?

A good clue would be to tell us which car it's in.

I don't know how to distinguish the engines themselves, but if you look at the tdi badge on the bootlid, on a 100ps the badge is all silver, a 110 engine has the 'i' in red and a 130 engine has the 'di' in red.

Not necessarily, my old Polo TDI 100hp sport had a red 'DI'. I think that if it has a red 'DI' it means it’s a sport model.

I think it's the 115PD that got the red 'i' but this only works if it's a Golf or a Passat as someobody else mentioned other VW cars differ.

Silver 'i' is 100hp, red 'D' and 'i' is 130hp AFAIK.

Bit of confused misinformation here.

VAG dealers used to stick pretty much any badges on they wanted, so they aren't a definitive guide (though generally are).

The only way for sure is to look under the carpet in the boot, there is a sticker in there and it will tell you the power output of the engine.

Yup- The badge could easily have been changed or the incorrect one put in.

As said the sticker will tell you the power in KW- simply convert it and you have the HP.

Also what year is the car? I think PD130s are 6 speed.

130tdi will have a 96kw sticker in the boot...failing that ring VW with the reg/VIN number and ask them to confirm the engine

that is one of the only ways to tell, i have heard of many cars being badged up as the higher power models to sell on

a 2004 Passat 130 will have a 6 speed box, but i think most did by then
