Took the trusty Mondi for it's first MOT today only to find it failed because by number plate didnt have a BS mark or the postcode of the supplying dealer on it. Perfectly standard plate, and in fact the one supplied with the car when I bought it!!! Apparently rules tightened at the beginning of October.

Clearly a death trap and not fit to be allowed on the road. I wouldn't mind if the plate was spaced funny, or the wrong type face, but missing a BS standard mark and a post code thats so small you have to be within 2 ft to read it..... wtf.

Yep, new regulations from not so long ago, any vehicle manufactured after 2001 needs to display the number plate manufacturers name, postcode and the BS stamp. Along with obviously correct legal spacing and font etc.

Ask for the MOT fee back and take it else where, I make my plates up work with nothing on them and both mine and Mrs Jem's cars have passed, whats the fail code?

Also this PDF covers what the testers should be looking for. It's a visual inspection so while the BS kite must be there they dont actually test the reflectivty...

Most of this came about when safety cameras and the congestion charge started. For it to work(read make money) the cars have to have the correct number displayed.
There were all sorts of "mistakes" being made in shops making plates before they had to put their name and post code on them. Today they have to check the car ID(in theory) before selling plates.

What if the shops make a "mistake" with their name and post code,if you get my drift. It seems silly to rely on someone (the shop) to do something when the reason you ask them to do it is 'cos you don't trust them them to do it....I'm not explaining myself very well am I?What I mean is the gov. don't trust the shop to put the correct VRN on the plate yet trust them to put their name/post code on correctly...

The shop is supposed to check the car ID before taking the number plate order and making them. If they then hand over plates with a "mistake" on them it any problems that arise from those plates will come back to them.

I know a few people who had mistakes on their plates, just a couple of numbers reversed, you would not get away with it today.

I could understand if it was vehicles from the date of the legislation but seems a bit of piss take for the government to back date it 6 years ,how much of a cut are they getting from plate manufacturers wink

Have there been any other retrospective motoring laws that actually force you to replace part of your car to comply with?
