Oops Upside Your Head

Novel approach to beating fines

Impossible to read. Sort of.
Impossible to read. Sort of.
Drivers in Eastern Europe don’t bother themselves with number plate sprays and pricey camera detectors to avoid fines, they take a far more simplistic approach.

This driver, believed to have been spotted in Ukraine, is said to be one of many who are showing their displeasure at speeding tickets and other penalties by bolting their number plates on upside down.

This apparently shows a disregard for police, while at the same time reportedly using a loophole in the law.

It is said to be not clearly stated in Ukrainian traffic laws how the plates should be mounted, so they cannot be penalised for this.

Am I missing something here? Surely if we can see that the plate is simply upside down then so will the police and simply turn the image over to read it????

I guess it might confuse the average speed ones. Wouldn't work on normal Gatsos though.

I think there's a website that you put text into and it turns it upside down for you.

I know that it says something like ' the plate must be mounted so as to be visible from a 75 metre diamond marked on the ground with one point of the diamond at the plate'.

It does not specify how high the diamond should be, in fact I am pretty sure it says 'on the ground' as stated above. A diamond is a two dimensional shape so this could be interpreted to mean that your eye has to be at ground level in order to check that the rule has been complied with.

Anyway, using this interpretation, I mounted my plates about 12 inches back under the bumpers. They could still be seen by anyone following in another car but to any Gatso or SPECS camera they would be obscured.

I don't recall anything about them having to be the right way up. Would an upside down plate fool ANPR systems?

NIEmslie: I just wondered what type of car you have that allows mounting 12 inches back from the bumpers?

Does this mount on the fuel tank / spare wheel/ More info please!

I think GATSO flag up unreadable plates. In these case a human (who can't get any other job) takes over and reads them manually.
I have also heard of people with pre '73 cars and black silver plates, being caught.

We need to work on a better solution.

What about a plate at an extreme angle(in a glass box)with distorted text, like the advertising painted on a Rugby field?

Actually what about a plate lying horizontal, with a 45 degree mirror above.

I also have heard about people who site a similar model and colour car to their own, and wear that cars number plate. If that became widespread, they'd have to abandon it. Just don't get in a position where you need to present your documents!

Personally I think 007's Toblerone jobbie was the coolest....

I'm sure I've mentioned before, my old Celica had the front plate mounted underneath the front bumper on very bendy mounts, at anything over 15 mph it was bent backwards more than 45 deg - still readable to someone stood by the side of the road, totally invisible to a camera mounted on a stalk.

I imagine it would - I had german style plates on my VR6 and ANPR read the 1 as a 2 because of its style so upside down would completely fool it!

(I only know this cos I was stood in a Sainsburys that displays what the ANPR reads and was really excited to see that a car only one digit away from mine was somewhere on the forecourt . . . until the penny dropped. Durr!)
