Car workers union Unite has backed Indian firm Tata as its preferred choice if Jaguar Land Rover is sold.

Jaguar Land Rover union believes Indian firm best for workers
Tony Woodley, Unite joint general secretary, said last night the union’s shop stewards at Jaguar Land Rover had made clear that Tata would serve the best interests of the workers.
The workers said their preference would be to stay as part of Ford, but the US firm has indicated it plans to sell UK-based Jaguar and Land Rover and a deal could be done as early as spring 2008.
Mr Woodley said the stewards had made their decision based on the reports from the presentations made by all the shortlisted bidders from the union representatives who attended.
Based on serving the best interests of workers, the stewards decided Tata best fit the criteria.

Oh yes TATA - the Indian company famed for those cheaply made pick ups. I can see now why out of "all" the bids received for Jag/LR, the union has decided this company is the best fit and will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience of producing and developing new luxury vehicles...

it just show how far removed form reality the unions are. So Tata get it and then surprise the factory moves to India where they have no union issues and no enviromental issues to hinder progress and workers are paid for the work done. Or altrenativly they will come flat packed from india so they are assembled here to be british, but half the workers will go.
Having worked for a company bought by a large Indian one I can say that they will tell you how much they value our unique skills and experience, while planning how fast they can dump all the high cost UK workers and move functions to India where even the cleaners have degrees and the call centres are staffed by Doctors and MBA grads are all over the place. Sadly, they can't actually deliver as they're stuck in a Victorian hierarchical decision making process.

What about the best interests of the company, product, and customer as well??? Maybe these need to be addressed to make a good go of things?
Can't some people see pass their noses? And remember, these are just proposals being put forward. I wouldn't be at all surprised if things change at a later date, and by that time it would all be too late...
I really dont get why people have such a dim view of TATA. Yes they produce cheap plasticy vehicles. That because there primary market at the moment is India and other developing/ 3rd world countries. What TATA have going for them is they are already involved in manufacturing the vast majority of components to build a car including a lot of the raw materials required.
They also happen to produce tea, coffee, watches, fertilizer, machine tools and loads of other stuff. They even have their own hotel chain. They are a very diversified company.
Buying Jaguar gets them a premium brand as well as a lot of experience at developing high quality cars. Jaguar will be part of a group which has the resources to continue investing heavily in future development. TATA are not stupid they will not dilute the brand.

I work for Tata (now). They have a lot of brands and a lot of cash. The markets they are buying into are as an alternative to spending the money developing into those markets. 'd be very surprised if the intention is to just stick a Jag badge on the latest Tata car.
OMG crap brand crap name crap crap and more crap,sure to be a craaaap car,this is is a mirror image of all that is wrong with th uk,wake up motor industry there aint much family silver left to sell,you cant live on yesterdays glorys (UNLESS YOU ARE A FOOTBALL TEAM),they do such a good job these indian call centres dont they?,imagine a JAGTA what will it be based on a series 1 xj6 with a bl ITAL/MARINA engine!!,can the last one out turn the light off please!!
