Should track rods ends of two different makes for the same car still show the same amount of exposed thread?

Theoretically it shouldn't matter - as long as they are the same overall length. You'll not use the full range of adjustment anyway - not unless you've radically bent the front of your car.

Are you trying to set the tracking up by counting the threads?

Possibly not, but as long as there are enough threads which are not exposed (i.e. doing their job), nothing to worry about.

edited to add (I agree with the above.. Must learn to type faster)

Trying to see if it is centred properly, I suspect the steering wheel may have been off at some time.

Is'nt it a bit difficult to drive with no steering wheel?

Depends how strong a grip you have...

Not that I've tried steering a Capri 1.6 Laser using nowt but the steering column when the Mole Grips fell off, or anything.

The only way to do that properly is to remove the column from the equation and centre the steering rack without the track rods on it. The column itself has no centre point, being a column and all.

Some steering racks have a centre mark on them.

Without doing this, the only other way of checking is to measure turns from centre to stop.

I can remember fitting a track rod end which was different in length to the old one, as said make sure there is enough thread wound into the track rod end and still be able to set the tracking properly, longer is less off a problem than shorter.

Is there more thread showing now than with the old track rod end and, if so, how much? What make are the ends?

As long as each track rod end has 1.5 times the width of its thread engaged you should be fine.
