Calling M5 Drivers!

If you have an E60 BMW M5 we need your help...

The Wortec VXR8 Supercharged
The Wortec VXR8 Supercharged
A few weeks ago we tested out a Lotus Carlton and noticed on the thread that one thing people loved to do was compare it with the M5.

Recently Vauxhall wheeled out their latest super saloon, the VXR8, which was again hyped as being a cut-price M5 basher.

In tests the cooking VXR8 was found to be a great drive, but not quite as fast as it could be.

For this reason we’ve managed to get our hands on a 600bhp+ supercharged Wortec VXR8 ‘Carbon Edition’ - the one that could be seen at the PistonHeads Show last month.

The car costs £47,500 on the road, so is cheaper than an M5, but is it necessarily better than the Munich machine?

This is where you come in.

Motor magazines are clambering to get hold of the Wortec VXR8, but we’ve managed to blag it for tomorrow.

What we need is an E60 M5 driver to have a look and tell us what you think.

Tell us where you are and, within reason, we can come over, take you for a spin and get your impressions.

Reply on the thread below and you may be able to help us put an end to this Vauxhall/BMW war once and for all…

There's no such thing as an E90 M5. The E90 is the current 3-Series saloon. Do you mean E60 M5?

You should take it back to BMW mate, you obviously only have 2/3's of an M5. In many ways like a present day Bee Gee's concert.

I agree. I haven't driven either of them, but I bet they're worlds apart.

This will be a good comparison.

Both big hp engines with minimum 8cylinders, both large 4 dr saloons, both RWD.

Id be interested to see what the BMW owner thinks. It shouldnt be forgotten though, that the Wortec car is modified to put in on the same playing field.

Still, Id like an E60 owners thoughts on a standard VXR8 in terms of a bang for your bucks comparison.

I have a '06 22,000 mile (from new) E60 M5 and apart from the gearbox, it's great. I'd love to try the VXR (as long it's manual!) and will be available in the Fleet, Hants area tomorrow.

I've compared the standard VXR8 to my current E60 M5 and yes, from a quality/drive/performance perspective they are worlds apart with the M5 way ahead. HOWEVER, in a day to day driving environment how often can you 'use' the M5's full capability?

I'd love to compare the Wortec beasty though and have emailed Oli to say just that!

Would be great if 2 or 3 M5 owners could review - interesting to hear if conclusions are different...?

Tis going to be like asking 205 GTi drivers to review a Golf Mk1 or 2, really rather biased. You probably ought to invite other high powered saloon car owners along to try to get a less biased view (and no I'm not one although I'd love a chance to have a go!).

My bold! All the time if your silly & dangerous. You can say the same with almost any car, say the VXR8.

If I had the cash I'd have a VXR8 for the track as i'd not be as worried about smashing it up and keep the M5 for the road.
