I've put this in the VW forum, but it might get more views here.

Personally I think it is not too bad looking...

What engine, transmission are they talking about with this, FWD with 2.0 Turbo or 4WD 3.6 thingy?

Ewwww!

Bland, a slightly Alfa type back end, it even somehow manages to remind me of the Volvo C30.

Nope, they need to get their designers back to the drawing board and come up with something decent. Even sticking the Corrado shell on the current chassis would be a better bet.

New Subaru nose, and Mk1 A3 rear.

Not really part of the VW family face, unless this will be the car to move the range in a different direction.

Badge wants to be in the centre of the grill.

That's not a coupe - it's just a mundane (if fairly good looking) 3-door hatch. If it was the next generation of golf I'd be all praise but I don't see how it can be considered a spiritual successor to the Corrado and Scirocco.

Unless they've massively reduced the weight over the golf (which would be necessary in order to make it handle) or they've made it rear wheel drive (which would be odd, considering the Corrado and Scirocco weren't), I simply don't see the point.

ETA: come to think of it, if they produced a genuine successor to the Corrado, wouldn't be be a direct competitor for the TT?

^^^^ Exactly.

As I said before - why isn't this the new Golf, now that there's the Touran for families and the Golf Plus for old folks?

That was exactly my first thought. It might look better in the flesh but those pics are quite disappointing. The Scirocco was one of those cars that nobody dislikes... that could change.

One would assume it will have the R32 engine in it. I wonder if they'll go back to calling it a "VR6" in this car?

Jeeze, seeing the 147 pics next to the "new" VW design, its pretty clear whats the fresher looking design.

As a New Golf yes it's a nice looking car, as a Scirocco or Corrado no. It's just not a coupe.

I'm guessing that VAG would only see it as a competitor if they released the TT Shooting brake - which I guess this kills off if it wasn't killed of already...

The other point is the nose - is this the new VW face? scratchchin

ETA: Personally I was waiting for one of the above, but I'll have to think whether this VW fills the gap...

I wasn't saying that this is a competitor to the TT, I'm saying it would have been if it was a true successor to the Corrado and Scirocco.

The Corrado and Scirocco weren't really competitors for the Audi coupes of the past, so I don't see it as a direct competitor for the TT. Tbh, most manufacturers have now done what Honda used to do anmd make their 3 door hatches very coupe-like - Astra, Focus, 147. so it's hard to see how much further a coupe could go.

I like it - and probably the same people who bought Corrados and Sciroccos will like it too.

But the old ones were both 3dr hatchbacks aswell. If you are going to pigeonhole bodystyles by name...

VW designers should go to the back of the class for plagarism. Ripping off a 10yr old Alfa design, whatever next?
Yes, I agree. Bits of 147, various Fiats and as someone said earlier even that new little Volvo hatchback thingy in there. Quite nice, but not exactly cutting edge.
