Ahem! Like i said, it has to be acceptable as wide a cross section as possible.
I can see what youre saying JMG, but if cyclists also drive cars, then theyve paid for their usage!![]()
Stay cool guys.![]()
Good point Delta.... I'll concede that one.. but all other bicyclists MUST pay.......

What about horses, electric vehicles, vehicles with diplomatic plates, vehicles older than 25 years, steam vehicles, tractors (not sure) and pedestrians when crossing the road?
They dont pay tax either.
Dusty IMHO ALL road users should pay, obviously stepped to account for road damage, thus bicycle should pay £5,-, horses £10,- (shit removal charge) buses and trucks £1000,- old cars 1/2 price to normal cars, electro and all other road hindrances @ 2000%
the only ones without any charge should be fire/ambulance/police/HM FOrces and disabled vehicles
Diplomats/politicians and other such useless "waste of spaces" should be charged as road hindrance

Hi Deltaf,
Was looking at drafting something later today (been busy messing about with computers
) but you've managed to beat me to it.
You seem to have covered it pretty well, though I'll have a think later and suggest any additions/amendments I think might help.
Keep up the good work.

Sorry but push iron tax is feckin outrageous, my council tax should cover the 'damage' my bike makes to the road surface on my way to work.
Besides which it'd be totally unenforcable, if your riding round with no tax disc, no ID and you swear your names Mickey Mouse what they gona do, send you to jail.
Apart from that though, I'd sign it, the large gantry's erected in my area for use with the new DIRECTS traffic charging research programme look ominous indeed. Bastards!!!

Right, had a look at deltaf's suggestion, had a think, and came up with the following.
Never actually drafted a petition before, but think that rather than merely presenting a list of demands we should make it clear what we're protesting about and why.
Anyway, what do you reckon to this:
I/we the undersigned wish to protest about current policy regarding speed limits and their enforcement.
I/we believe the fact that 1 million motorists are prosecuted for speeding every year without these speeding motorists causing 1 million accidents, but with their convictions raising £73 million, indicates that current policy is more to do with easy revenue generation than with road safety.
I/we also believe that current policy is also unnecessarily criminalising large numbers of otherwise honest, law abiding citizens and causing them stress and hardship.
The public will only support laws it regards as being sensible and fair, and the current policy is fuelling a climate of growing resentment as evidenced by the increasing number of attacks on speed cameras. I/we therefore call for the adoption of the following measures, which I/we believe will be perceived as being a much fairer and more genuine system for improving road safety:
1) The removal forthwith of all speed cameras sited illegally, behind obstructions or otherwise not clearly visible, unless sited at GENUINE accident black spots. All cameras sited at accident black spots to be high visibility and used in conjunction with clear ‘black spot’ and ‘safety camera’ warning signs.
2) All mobile speed camera vans known as ‘talivans’ to be removed from operation immediately.
3) Resources freed as a result of point 2 to be channelled into INTELLIGENT policing of road users by experienced police officers who have the sense and discretion to deal with situations on their merits.
4) Scrapping of all artificially low speed limits in favour of limits based on 85th percentile and ‘time dependent’ or otherwise variable limits that dictate slow speeds at busy times but still enable higher speeds at quiet times.
5) Introduction of comprehensive road safety programme in schools, dealing with ALL aspects of road safety, i.e. motoring, cycling and walking.
6) The right to trial by jury for motoring offences along with the rights accorded in criminal cases in respect to right of silence and non self-incrimination.
7) All plans for TRACKING of vehicles for congestion charging, speed enforcement or any other purpose by ‘black box’, GPS or any other means of continual monitoring that would represent an unacceptable intrusion into civil liberty to be scrapped.
Comments/suggestions please. Need to check on the right to silence bit for a start as I thought they'd done away with that, but could be wrong.
As proven by the speed humps thread, people power can make a real difference - just so long as people are prepared to get off their arses and make an effort. So let's do it!

I believe the right to silence was the attempt to not self incriminate as it was a breach of Human Rights. But it wasn't as it was putting the individual before the good of the masses which isn't fair. Apparantly.
Why not add in tougher enforcement / penalties for those dodging tax and insurance

I think Graham Bell's version is preferable as it gets the point across without using the word "demand", which reduces the perception of the lentalists of right wing lunacy.
(I'd sign either version tho.)
Yeah id agree. Im happy with that draft Graham, no problem at all. It adresses all the things we're having shoved up our backsides, and should do the trick! Lets do it.
