7.29 GT-R 'Ring Video

Footage shows Nissan GT-R knocking eight seconds off previous best

The onboard microwave was an option
The onboard microwave was an option
Last month we brought you news that a ‘standard’ Nissan GT-R had lapped the Nurburgring in a staggering seven minutes and 29 seconds.

Since then it has emerged that the car may have had a few tweaks destined for the European market, but as yet there has been no real evidence of the astonishing run.

Now a video has surfaced showing the GT-R lapping in 7mins 29secs and it was apparently captured by a quick thinking fan who saw the footage on a television screen at a Nissan event.

The previous best lap time for GT-R of 7:38 was one of the fastest laps achieved by a production car despite conditions being slightly damp on two corners.

You can see from the vid that the clock is stopped at 7.29.03 and there is a Nissan logo at the end with the words ‘The Legend Is Real’.

So that’s that cleared up then.

Speed & bhp per £ it has to be one of the most impressive cars ever made, worthy of the Godzilla name, yet it a seems a bit too clinical compared to say a Porsche,Corvette or a TVR.

No doubt some retards will come along soon banging on about how they think it's better than a 997 because it can go round a corner 2 mph quicker.

I think you need to find a little objectivity, have you even driven a 911?

Given that us Porschephiles are so obsessed with Ring times, this should not come as a surprise. If this time had been set by a TT, GT3/2, we'd all be raving about the ability of the lovely 911 in it's latest guise. Now the GT-R outporforms Porsches and that at half the price. Respect where respect is due.

I love my Porsche but I am impressed by the GT-R. Not that I would want one myself, it's not exactly my kind thing. Nevertheless, it's a mightily capable car and it's just plain stupid to bash it.

Got bored halfway through.. I'd love to know how they disguised Kermit so well. You'd hardly tell it was him driving. I've seen a lot of smoother laps of the 'Ring. BossCerbera's for starters.

Yet another exercise in number crunching. Hats off to the software developers. They've obviously done a fantastic job.

Yes, it must have nearly as much electronic stuff on board as a 997 Turbo.

Every couple of weeks PH gets bored, throws a new GTR/911 angle into the mix, lights the blue touch paper and stands back rubbing its hands with glee as petty riposte follows ignorant rant! Brilliant, yet a little cringe-worthy.

Both cars are great. Pick your favourite if you must and live and let drive (or dream)

It's a badge stuck on the front.

The Porsche crest was designed because the American importer wanted to give the funny little tuned Beetles he was selling some instant heritage and appeal.

What a gear shift. Huge respect to Nissan is due for making that weighty projectile circumnavigate the ring so rapidly. bow

Possibly...

... but there are definately ignorants out there that think there is nothing better than a 911, or there are no alternatives when it comes to performance cars.

I have a 911 right now, and have owned a number of 911 varients and they have all been great cars. I love them with a passion! But to ignore this achievement and write off the GTR, as many have done, as some sort of cheat and a load of marketing spin is unfair. How many of you have driven the 911 and the GTR? How can judgements be made on some journos articles and a couple of photos and videos?

Get out there, test the cars for yourself and put your money where your mouth is...

I did... and I'm waiting to hear when I can expect my GTR to arrive so that it can keep the 911 company at night.

I didn't have a 911 on my bedroom wall either... for the record it was Sam Fox, Linda Lusardi & the Countach (showing my age here!).

However, I would be more than happy now to have a framed print of the 911 (in current GT2 guise) and the Nissan GT-R on my wall (yes dear, in the garage!)... in fact, alongside prints of a nice classic black whaletail 911 & previous Skyline GTR would be dandy!
