PM: Drivers Benefit From High Fuel Prices

Brown says soaring fuel prices are for our own good

Gordon Brown thinks that record fuel costs and driving taxes will benefit motorists in the long run, it has been reported. The Prime Minister also wants to get all petrol-driven cars off Britain’s roads by 2020.

He is taking a high-risk strategy at the G8 Summit in an attempt to show that Britain can lead the way on green motoring issues. Part of his plan is apparently to push for all vehicles to be electric or hybrid within 12 years.

He is also standing behind the idea that high taxes on motorists and spiralling fuel costs will be an affective way of stopping people driving petrol cars. This appears to suggest that he is still in favour of controversial plans to impose high taxes on the most polluting cars, while letting low emissions vehicles dodge duty.

The strategy risks alienating Brown even further from British drivers who are already suffering from huge fuel bills. Paul Watters of the AA said: ‘Motorists are already suffering from very high prices – this just piles on the pain.’

The Prime Minister is also understood to be looking to teach motorists ‘eco-driving techniques’ that will bring down fuel consumption. He said: ‘I think the combination of car licence and petrol costs could, if we develop the new technology, be to the benefit of car drivers.’

I guess the roads will be less busy once all the people who cant afford to fuel their cars only have to walk to the job centre and back and not clog up the M1 every morning, thus benefiting the few remaining drivers.

GB won't be in any position of power by 2020. How does he think all the classics will go. Unleaded didnt kill off the DB5 and this won't.

Watching Gordon Brown implode is hilarious, in a head-shaking "how is he not in a mental home yet" kind of way.

The best thing is, you can see the votes ebbing away with every word the monocular tttish wcensoredking ctbag says.

Get rid of him? Just as he's becoming such excellent entertainment? Nah - but we can still be grateful that he *has* to call an election in 2 years time...

Did anyone see the costs of the G8 summit ?
£285 million (at least it's Japan footing the bill!!)

or in fact whilst the G8 leaders were discussing food shortages, they were tucking into an 8 course lunch and a 12 course dinner - with caviar and champagne

I'm not sure what was worse - Blair who would spin everything to make it look like he was doing everything right or Brown who hasn't got the first clue about PR and just does what he thinks is right and screw what anyone wants

Of Course brown hasn't got a clue about much, like when he insisted in selling the UK's gold reserve and lost £2 billion !!

All vehicles electric/hybrid within 12 years?! Of course they'll be, Gordon! The plonker has clearly never heard of Article 28 of the EU treaty and has failed to notice that his Prime Ministerial Jag is neither electric nor hybrid.

Why stop there? We can ban planes and boats too! Then we'll just be left with those evil polluting cows.

What an A grade waste of oxygen this moron is!

So people with vintage and classic cars have them converted to LPG or diesel or electric, that'll be very useful for maintaining their orginality.

What a Prick!

My guess is that he has purchased considerable shares in alternative fuels companies.

Moron.

For all cars to be electric or hybrid in 12 years time we'd have to start selling nothing but those right now.

If you compare the actual amount C02 / km generated by a G-Wizz with that from a Aygo / Polo blue motion type car, it is about the same (based on electricity from a 40% efficiend fossil fuel power station)

Unless we are going to have constructed 5 nuclear power stations EVERY YEAR between now and then, we'll still be burning fossil fuels.

Cheers,

FT.
