500bhp GT3 version of the Audi R8 announced

Audi have announced a GT3 (i.e. race) version of the R8 that will be available to customers from Autumn 2009. It is currently being shaken down by Frank Biela but the power being quoted is 500bhp.

More details later, but it sounds like a welcome development and puts Audi head-to-head with Porsche's own GT3 customer cars...

Yes, still a V8, but with a RWD chassis, six-speed sequential box and bespoke suspension. Audi will campaign it in a few European races before making customer cars available in the autumn.

That to me, doesn't suit the racing wings etc.
Most racers look ace (thinking 911, DB9 here), but that IMO looks awful.

it does look a bit wrong, the rear profile does not suit the huge wing, still wouldn't say no though.

Yes, it should be. We've already seen the pictures, so its just a question of finding out how much power and at what cost.

Whatever you feel about its looks (of this Project R16 version of the R8), I think Audi should be applauded for taking on Porsche. Competition breeds a better product for us all.

That looks fantastic and brilliant if indeed the road going versions are RWD. With a V8 and mid engines layout it should smoke a 911 GT3, shame it will probably cost a million billion pounds.
