child is on its way and it seems that there are no suitable baby seats for the wife's daewoo matiz due to the short seat belt length. I've tried asking the same question on baby related sites but get useless answers.

extenders are out, even the manufacturer does not recommend them.

replacing the car is also out as its far better and well specced than it's worth. (yes yes its ste, buts it does its job well)

Is it possible to fit a whole new longer seat belt?

Thanks

Does it not have the little anchors specifically for baby seats? I know some of my cars have/had them.

If you get a Graco baby seat you can get a base which stays in the car that the seat clips into - doesnt need such a long belt as it just goes through the base, not round the seat. Also much easier to get the baby in and out as you just clip the seat into the base.... might be worth a look.

Maxi Cosi also do one of these bases.

the chevrolet version of the matiz has isofix, so no problem for that car.

graco base and seat looks to be around £110
maxicosi base and set around £190

According to the maxi cosi site this will work with a Matiz 01 to 04

Saab did a seat belt extension

It was a buckel at one end that clipped onto the belt and the part that clipped into the anchorage at the other.

Not too dear either IIRC

Hi, I've got a Recaro babyseat (think it's a baby expert plus) & that fits in pretty much any car. About £150 or so but you can get it in loads* of different colours.

Saying that though, I guess you're talking about a rear facing one for a newborn, in which case I would speak to a Chevrolet dealer as someone else has said.

  • well it comes in 8 different colours which might not be loads but quite a fewbiggrin

Get something better than a tinfoil car that folds up in an accident to cart your sproggs about in.

Friend of ours had this problem with their Discovery. They bought a Jane travel system and the seat belts in the Disco wouldn't quite fit. In the end, they got some longer belts from a newer Disco so I guess Land Rover recognised that it was a problem and updated them (the part number was one digit different on the longer ones).

Anyway, I digress. Definitely get something with a base. We have the Maxicosi Cabriofix and one isofix base for her car and a normal easybase for mine. Two key benefits - 1. the obvious time saving getting the seat in and out and 2. the fact that the base fixes into the car (with either belts or isofix) about 100 times more rigidly than just strapping in the seat on its own.
