You can increase the thermal efficiency of an engine by injecting (small amounts of) water into the cylinders along with the air/fuel mixture. As water changes from liquid to gas (boils) it expands far more than the petrol/air mixture alone would. I have a vague memory that someone experimented with it in F1 at one point.

I somehow doubt that retrofitting such a kit is going to work very well though.

I was going to try running my car on water, but then I thought the money would be better off going to the zoo to see a monkey tug off in a pile of its own feaces.

water injection mainly serves to cool the combustion chamber and the incoming charge, so less detonation and you can use higher compression ratios

Yup, or more boost.

This does actually work to some degree, the water is not burn though. Pass electric current (12v power supply) through water, oxygen will bubble off one electrode, hydrogen off the other. Feed hydrogen in with your air intake and the engines 02 sensor will decrease fuel intake due to less 02, your engine ends up burning a mixture of hydrogen and fuel saving you money.
The problem is in the fine tuning, you can only do this to a small degree without the engine computer not liking it so would probably better left to someone who knows what they are doing.

And where does the power to do the electrolysis come from?

This thread again...

Real hydrogen injection research is all about scavenging some exhaust heat to produce the hydrogen. Injecting it essentially lets the engine run slightly leaner. It's a small gain.
The jam jar electrolysis kits do fk all.

the same place as the power to make the spark. run the A/C, headlamps, tail lamps, indicators and stoplamps, stereo, charge your phone.........

Yes...but just ask anybody working at R&D at a car company, hydrogen fuel cells are the way forward wink. Allegedly.

And people who buy these kits deserve to be conned, it's not water injection.

The extra load on the alternator is greater than the gain from burning the hydrogen. Basically it would be a complicated way to make your car less efficient.
