Merc SLR 722 S

The final fling for the SLR...or is it?

The final encore of the McLaren-Mercedes SLR is turning into a bit of a drawn-out affair. Not that we are complaining mind you, but for a car that is on its last legs it seems surprising that we could be in store for two more variants.

The first is the ’09 722 S, which is basically a 722 without a roof. Interestingly the 722 was supposed to be a limited edition in itself, so does this make the S a limited limited edition? It also didn’t get the best reviews, so it is debatable what a roofless version can bring to the table.

The good news is that with a top speed of 220mph it will be one of the fastest convertibles ever built. It uses the coupe’s supercharged 5.5L V8, which produces 650hp. Only 150 S models will be built but before the McLaren disappears for good there is still a speedster version on the cards…

Not the best looker I've seen! But 650bhp!? I thought they had 722bhp, hence the name!? Or am I getting my wires crossed somewhere?

Expect to see at least 145 of them, in two tone beige/copper with Dubai number plates, parked up around Knightsbridge

It was named 722 after the number that Moss and Jenks used on the Mille Miglia.

Edit. A bit too slow.

I'd hazard a guess this is something to do with activity at the ring this morning:

Lets hope your guess is wrong then, or there may only now be 149 left. This is what's there now..

Correct, and it was numbered 722 because they started the race at 7.22am.

ok, so how is it boring? its got 650Bhp will do 220mph and its a convertable so you will easily be able to hear that amazing exaust note!! they sound fantastic! i would buy one just for their noise! (if i had the money!)

oh, and only 150 of them so only a very few footballers will prob get their hands on one.

Am I the only one who thinks the SLR really is just the least interesting of the current crop of silly money supercars?

I'd take an Enzo/Carrera GT/Zonda/Veyron/Koeniggsegg/Maser MC12/Reventon/etc over this any day. It is just an ugly, bloated version of the better looking (and nearly as fast) top of the range SLs.

Surely more a Messerschmidt without a roof would be more accurate? wink *Nothing* comes close to the sound of a merlin engine on a lazy summer's day...
