Why all the love for German cars?
Discussion
Is it because they're European and you feel patriotic to Europe?(Like how some Americans only buy American)
Is it that the quality is better? Is it really better than the rest?
Is it a status thing?
Do shows like Topgear influence you? TV shows? Music videos?
Any German cars that you don't like?

I think some people just like what some people like. You hear people championing the Americans (300 bhp/ton
), those championing classic British engineering and how its gone down the drain (TC16) and those that love the Jap motors (lots of people). Some people just have an idea of what German cars are, and they like that ideal

Well out of the cars I have driven for any length of time, including Japanese, British, French, Italian, my BM and my father's A4 are easily the best to drive. Feel so much more connected to the road, like you sit in them rather than on top of them. The build quality in my experience so far has been great too. I'm sure there's cars from most manufacturers that also offer these qualities, but you know that every BMW or Audi is going to offer a good ride, good quality etc, whilst a top spec Ford or Vauxhall might also but a bottom spec one wont.
Drove a brand new astra recently, much preferred my BM. There's definately a difference.

For me it's because I've always admired Mercedes. Love the luxury feel which I've never experienced in a French, Japanese or American car. The dealership also looks after me very well indeed.
Perhaps if I had the money to splash out on a high end motor my opinion would differ although I strongly suspect I'd still stay German and go for a Porsche.

I've got 2 VWs and a Porsche. I've stayed with VW after my first one partly due to the decent community and there's always somebody willing to help you out if you're having troubles and the fact that I've never had one break down on me, it's also been pretty simple to fix.
The Porsche I just kind of ended up with but think it's great all the same.
If I were in the market for something else I wouldn't hesitate to pick something non-german like a TVR, Mazda, Nissan, Alfa etc. Not such a fan of American motors though.

Apart from Mercedes being a bit crap for a few years (I believe they're back on the right track now) - the mainstream German brands have, on the whole, lived up to their quality and well engineered tag.
Saying that though - I also have a lot of respect for the Japanese manufactures (Honda at the top) as they very cleverly redefined how a mass market car should be made and there is little to complain at regarding the reliability levels.

I recently got into a brand new Toyota Avensis, IMO the quality of the interior is equal to a modern Mercedes C class.Lexus, in particular, and many American cars have the luxury that German cars have. The differentiating factor is how they drive.

Stunning car - thansk for posting that.I've always been into Vw's for somereason and i've also been into bmw's for sometime now. take my old M3, how could you not see what there's to love about them??

Would definately have one in my wish garage.
I've had 2x old polos a mk3 golf, an E36 and an E39 and a porsche 911. I've also had a Jeep Cherokee. I think they all felt really solid compared to other cars. Though I accept that aside from the top end german cars, their glory days are over and that the Japanese are taking over that crown.
I get the feeling that there is a large amount of badge snobbery with German cars, admittedly BMW's are a good drive but every Audi I have driven or been driven in (to?) has the harshest ride ever and I still can't belive the price of a Golf, its a hatchback, the second/third smallest size of car you can buy (depending on the manufacturer's lineup), why is it over £20k? And don't get me started on the BMW 1 series...

I had a 2003 Grand Cherokee and thought that it wasn't too badly put together - then found it was built in Austria! Apparently the build difference between the domestic US and European spec cars is night & day.Asterix said:
