How do you afford stuff??
Discussion
following on from the "how do you finance your cars" thread... just interested to hear how people afford to live in general.
I have quite a well-paid job considering my age, yet after rent and tax etc have basically very little left over.
I know of people who earn less than I do, who are 40+ with mortgage etc...
now I don't know if it's just a case of different expectations etc, but I don't want to still be worrying about the weekly food shop and whether to go to tesco or asda, in 10 years time....
aside from you lucky buggers with 996/diablo/espritV8 etc, how do you people in the more-real world afford to live?
things that come to mind are property trading, stocks/shares,becoming a government sponsored criminal or scam-artist!
other than that, it would seem that you'd need a salary of at least 60k pre-tax, to be able to not worry?!?!?!? or is this crazy??
thoughts on a postcard....

Yeah, still live at home with parents.
All what I earn I spend on my car, beer and a few toys
I'm better off at the moment in a shite job than I will be when I get my first "proper" job. It wont leave a lot after the student loan, taxes, rent etc are deducted, I have nightmares about not being able to afford a car!

>I'd rather have a house than a car!
>I think you've come to the wrong website
Car comes at the top of the list!
having said that, There's no way I'd live with the parents... just couldn't do it.
at least seems there are others that don't have any money either!!
right then.. off to deal some antiques/sell some shares/sell a house/become a criminal so I can afford an RX7 !

WHen I got the TVR was earning about 11k a year, which would not have bought me a house.
So I thought sod it I'm going to buy a TVR.
Got another job now, which pays a few k more, and am trying to save some money.
But when you get £650 servicing bills for the Supra, another £140 for fan shroud within a month it becomes very difficult to save.

One problem could be that you rent.
I work for a Construction company, the sister company to said Construction Company is a Property Management company. Weekly rent on the Flats averages out at around £90 Per Week. Mortgage Payments PER MONTH on the same flat are around £120. Now admittedly, this is the west coast of Scotland, but a rough guide is to take your Rent Payments per Calender Month, then Halve it, and you have what your Landlord is paying as a mortgage (if it is still mortgaged.) Don't be put off by house prices, wouldn't you rather be investing in something that will give you equity in the future instead of giving your landlord more money to buy fast cars and a Spanish Villa?

Supraman.. you bought a Supra when you were earning that!?!?!?!? was it a Mk4 ? I have been looking at them, but the decent ones (manual and <50k) are a bit out of my price range.
tvradict.. I certainly would prefer to be paying a mortgage, but the kind of mortgage I can get without much of a deposit doesn't allow me to get much.. and I don't really want to get a mortgage for somewhere that I don't feel happy living.
