OK. I'm a car nut, so I'm on the forums associated with my kind of car.

So I looked at Pistonheads to see the same kind of car. Interesting stuff.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/652990.htm

The car is listed with 38,500 miles.

Except, look at what has happened when the car is shown in Japan: 111,000 kilometers:

http://www.e-impreza.com/exhibit/3192.html

Currently being discussed here:

http://bbs.22b.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_...

So what do people think about this car, which is a fresh import to the country?

I wouldn't say this is the first time this has been done rolleyes

An absolute disgrace though, I remember reading about a guy who bouught an escort cosworth, 60,000 miles, from ebay only to find it was really 160,000. I'd be sick...

Well, you would expect an 11 year old car to have 38,500 miles on it...

How on earth you'd hide 100,000 miles of wear, tear and history is beyond me...

Why not? When I got my car it had 18,000 miles on at 5 years old.

And I assume it was a fresh Japanese import, probably without a paper trail to back the mileage up?

Don't assume that. Especially as you didn't say 'Well, you would expect an 11 year old fresh Japanese import, probably without a paper trail to back the mileage up-car to have 38,500 miles on it...

Question is, who's to blame here?

The car obviously is legit in Japan.

Did WRC sales buy the car in good faith with 38k on the clock off a crooked Japanese dealer, or are they crooked and do the adjustments themselves?

I have a 90 bought in 89 with 60k.

I had a 911 speedo overhauled at a place in Detroit. On their website it said "We do not clock or adjust the mileage so don't ask"

I called them and I timidly asked "could you stick on 2k as it's been broken a while" They said "yep, no problem."

(I could have done it myself but I didn't want to open it again)

I own a 50 year old car with well under 60,000 original miles. The difference is that it's documented.

Anyone can claim anything, if you buy a car like that, that likely has no proof that it's done such low mileage, you should be suspect.

It's easily to fake documentation in the UK though.

Just clock it before MOT/Service and you're all set.

I wonder why more people don't do this with mileage limited lease cars.

Just spoke to Naz from the WRC, he is saying that they bought it as is and they are the ones who have been ripped off, although he did say that he bought it from Japan then said the cars look the same so he is not sure, then said that it had been sold privately in Japan before they bought it.

Once it was pointed out that the limited edition plate was the same and therefore clocked, he then said they had boght it from an auction house in England.

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Poor bloke didn;t seem to pleased to be chatting about it though, funny what people tell you when you say your from a Auto paper and ask for "their side of the story".

I would imagine the ad goes down VERY quickley now.

Much, much more prevalent than most people would think. Highly dishonourable though....

Request a BIMTA certificate from the dealer. Its extremely difficult to clock a car imported directly from Japan. They keep records of the mileage each time the vehicle is passed through an auction house.
Yes cars do get clocked, but 99% of the time they are clocked in the UK.

If you request a BIMTA certificate this will have the accurate mileage of the car.
To say that 90% of all imports are clocked is a myth. The japanese are extremely trustworthy and honourable people.

Apart from the yakuza. And that ring of car thieves that were exporting stolen cars to the UK.

Maybe 10k or 20k, or even 40k, but 100k is guna be hard to hide when you look at the overall car surely. History aswell?
